The Defiance X12 is a ported 12-inch powered subwoofer in the Defiance X series from Paradigm Electronics of Mississauga, Ontario, where it slots below the X15 in driver size and amplifier power. It was launched at USD 1,299 with a three-year parts and labour warranty, and can be controlled either from its rear panel or from a phone.
Key specs that matter
Paradigm fits a 12-inch (305 mm) driver whose cone is polypropylene loaded with carbon, held by the patented ART surround Paradigm developed in-house. A class D amplifier rated at 650 W RMS, or 1,300 W dynamic peak, powers it. Paradigm lists a response of 20 Hz to 230 Hz within 3 dB on axis and gives 15 Hz as the DIN low-frequency limit. The low-pass filter varies from 30 Hz to 120 Hz, with a choice of third or fourth order slopes or a bypass setting, and phase moves from 0 to 180 degrees in 1 degree steps. RCA inputs cover left, right and LFE, and a pair of speaker-level inputs, a 3.5 mm trigger jack and a Micro USB socket used to load new firmware complete the panel. RCA input impedance is 10 kohm. The cabinet measures 49.3 x 45.7 x 49.4 cm with grille, weighs 28.1 kg and comes in satin black textured vinyl.
Engineering and use context
ART stands for Active Ridge Technology, a surround profile Paradigm designed to allow maximum driver excursion, which is how a 12-inch cone reaches the rated low end in this box size. The heavy-duty cabinet is braced inside, and the high-velocity, low-turbulence port fires downward, so no vent opening shows on the front or sides. Improved soft-clipping circuitry in the amplifier limits the peaks when the sub is driven hard. Power can be set to Auto signal sensing, permanently On, or Trigger. The Subwoofer Control app for iOS and Android adjusts phase, crossover and a Deep Bass Level of plus or minus 10 dB in 1 dB steps, and offers Movie, Music and Night listening modes, while a Local and App switch next to the level knob decides which control takes priority. An optional wireless module, priced at USD 199, removes the signal cable between receiver and sub.
Pairing
In a surround setup the LFE socket takes the subwoofer output of the receiver or processor. Two-channel systems without a sub output can use the stereo RCA inputs from a preamp or the speaker-level inputs taken from the amplifier terminals. The Night mode and the trigger jack make the X12 easy to fit into a cinema system that powers up in sequence.
Alternatives
The Paradigm Defiance X15 is the bigger ported sibling in the same X series, pairing a 15-inch driver with a 900 W RMS amplifier and an 18 Hz rated low limit.
