The Defiance V8 is the smallest and least expensive subwoofer in the Defiance family that Paradigm Electronics announced on August 20, 2018. It opened the V-Series at USD 399, below the V10 and V12, and it is the only Defiance model that does without smartphone app control and the Anthem calibration software offered on the rest of the range. Everything is set with knobs and switches on the rear panel, which keeps operation simple for systems where the sub is set once and left alone.

Key specs that matter

An 8 inch carbon-loaded polypropylene cone works with a Class-D power stage that Paradigm rates at 75 W RMS and 150 W dynamic peak. Response on axis holds within 3 dB from 34 Hz to 200 Hz, and the DIN low frequency extension figure is 28 Hz. The crossover knob sweeps the low-pass filter from 35 Hz to 120 Hz and offers a bypass position, while phase is chosen as 0 or 180 degrees on a panel switch rather than swept continuously. Sensitivity is 100 mV mono at full volume and RCA impedance is 8.3 kohm. The cabinet is 36.1 cm high, 32.4 cm wide and 35.8 cm deep and weighs 12.05 kg.

Engineering and use context

Paradigm uses a downward-firing layout for the Defiance range, with the driver mounted flush and a tuned port opening on the bottom of the enclosure. The benefit is a plain box with no port mouth on the sides, finished in a satin black woodgrain surface and closed by a detachable black grille. Next to the phase switch sit a volume control and the crossover dial, and a Power Mode selector offers Auto or On, with a status LED showing whether the amplifier is awake. In Auto the amplifier switches itself on as soon as signal reaches an input and shuts down again once it stops. Paradigm added improved soft-clipping to the amplifier stage to prevent the small driver from being overdriven when the level is set high.

Pairing

Connection follows the classic analogue pattern. Two RCA inputs, marked Left and Right/LFE, accept either the Sub-Out socket of a home cinema receiver or processor or the line-level outputs of a stereo preamplifier, and two speaker-level inputs, left and right, accept a feed from an amplifier. Because no app is needed, setup requires nothing beyond these rear controls, and the speaker-level terminals let older integrated amplifiers without a dedicated subwoofer socket drive the V8 directly.
