The Deep Blue 12 is a sealed powered subwoofer from Velodyne Acoustics and the second-largest of the four Deep Blue models, ranked above the Deep Blue 8 and Deep Blue 10 and below the Deep Blue 15. The line was introduced in March 2021, described by Velodyne as a fresh design created from the ground up after ten years without one, aimed at buyers who want a compact box with contemporary looks. It comes in black only, and the Australian list price was AUD 2,799.

Key specs that matter

The 12 inch woofer fires forward and gets its power from a Class AB amplifier with a rating of 350 W RMS, or 850 W as a dynamic figure. Within 3 dB the response runs from 26 to 140 Hz, while the overall range quoted by Velodyne extends from 15 Hz up to 250 Hz. Its low-pass crossover is variable between 50 and 180 Hz at 12 dB per octave, with a phase control covering 0 to 180 degrees. Outside dimensions are 35 cm wide, 37 cm high and 38.8 cm deep, and the subwoofer weighs 13 kg net; the shipping carton measures 46 x 48 x 46 cm and weighs 14.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

Compared with the 8 and 10 inch versions, this model steps up to a larger four-layer voice coil of 2.5 inches (65 mm), wound in copper and working in a gap energised by a pair of ferrite magnets. The high-excursion driver sits in an enclosure of solid MDF that is fully closed, with no port, and rigidly braced inside. A front baffle 52 mm thick adds stiffness where the driver is mounted, and the grille is fabric stretched over a round MDF frame. The power selector has Off, Auto and On positions, and in Auto the amplifier wakes by itself as soon as an input signal turns up. Velodyne states that the closed MDF cabinet is intended to keep distortion and enclosure vibration down. All adjustments are made with knobs on the rear plate.

Pairing

Gold-plated RCA sockets accept a stereo line signal or a mono LFE feed, and nickel-plated speaker-level inputs let the Deep Blue 12 connect to amplifiers without a pre-out. A loop-through LFE output on gold-plated RCA supports adding another subwoofer. With the filter reaching high it can be blended with small front speakers, while in a home cinema the LFE input takes the bass channel from an AV receiver or processor, whose own bass management then sets the crossover point.
