The Deep Blue 10 is the 10-inch model in the Deep Blue subwoofer line by Velodyne Acoustics, a set of four sealed designs built around 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch drivers. Velodyne presented the series in March 2021 as a new design, its first developed from scratch in a decade, with a small footprint and modern styling. Within the family it sits between the Deep Blue 8 and the Deep Blue 12, and it is offered in a single black finish. Its last European price was EUR 989.95.

Key specs that matter

A forward-firing 10 inch driver is fed by a Class AB stage delivering 350 W RMS and 850 W dynamic. Velodyne lists a response of 28 to 180 Hz within 3 dB and an overall range of 16 to 280 Hz. A low-pass control spans 50 to 180 Hz with a 12 dB per octave slope, and phase turns continuously from 0 to 180 degrees. The cabinet is 31.6 cm wide, 29.6 cm high and 34.8 cm deep, and the unit weighs 11 kg, or 12.5 kg in its carton.

Engineering and use context

The driver combines a reinforced polypropylene cone with a 2 inch (52 mm) coil that carries four layers of copper winding, set in a motor with two ferrite magnets. Velodyne credits this multi-layer coil with high efficiency and fast rise times. Velodyne mounts it in a closed box of solid MDF rather than a ported one, and the front baffle is 52 mm thick to limit panel vibration. The enclosure has rounded edges, and a removable circular grille covers the cone. A three-position switch offers Off, Auto and On; in Auto the amplifier falls back to standby after roughly eight minutes without an input signal. Level, crossover frequency and phase are set with rotary knobs on the back panel, so no app or remote is involved.

Pairing

On the rear are gold-plated RCA inputs for a stereo line pair and for LFE, plus nickel-plated high-level terminals. That means the Deep Blue 10 can be wired to the subwoofer jack of a surround receiver, a line feed from a two-channel preamp, or speaker cable from an integrated amplifier that has no dedicated sub output. A gold-plated LFE output passes the signal on, allowing a second subwoofer to be chained for larger spaces. The high upper filter limit leaves room to cross over to small satellite or bookshelf speakers whose bass extension ends relatively high.
