The C6 Sub is the 15-inch active subwoofer in the domestic range of ATC, the English maker of studio monitors, and it can anchor a two-channel system or complete a surround setup. It combines a full SL specification bass driver with an integral amplifier and ships with a 6-year warranty. The cabinet can be finished in any veneer to order.

Key specs that matter

The driver is 375 mm in diameter. ATC quotes a cut-off of 20 Hz at -6 dB with the unit free-standing, and amplitude linearity within 2 dB from 30 Hz to 300 Hz. The amplifier is rated at 450 W with a dynamic output of 1000 W, and maximum continuous level at 1 metre reaches 115 dB. Inputs are male XLR connectors with a 1 V sensitivity and a balanced impedance above 10 kohm. The enclosure measures 624 x 580 x 580 mm and weighs 60 kg.

Engineering and use context

SL stands for Super Linear, ATC's designation for drivers built around a massive motor assembly and precision flat wire coils wound in-house by hand. In the current specification the amplifier is a Class G design. Its low pass filters use a 2nd order critically damped slope, and overload is handled by active FET momentary gain reduction, which briefly pulls the gain down instead of letting the amplifier clip. The rear panel carries phase adjustment, a variable cut-off frequency, variable gain and stereo inputs, with a power-on indicator at the front. Earlier versions of the C6 Sub used a different electronics package - a 650 W amplifier running in Class A up to two thirds of maximum power, selectable filter points at 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 Hz, gain adjustable by 6 dB either way, and a contour equaliser giving a 6 dB lift between 40 and 60 Hz. Those earlier units cover 18 Hz to 250 Hz and weigh 63.6 kg.

Pairing

With balanced XLR inputs, the C6 Sub connects directly to a preamplifier or AV processor with balanced outputs, while a single-ended source needs an RCA to XLR adapter or a balancing stage. The stereo inputs allow it to take left and right channels from a two-channel preamp, and the variable cut-off lets it meet the natural roll-off of the main loudspeakers. Its size and weight call for a floor position planned in advance.
