The C1 Sub Mk2 is a compact active subwoofer from ATC, the English maker of studio and home loudspeakers based at Aston Down in Gloucestershire. Launched in November 2019 to replace the original C1 Sub, it was designed for both music and film use and carried a UK retail price of GBP 1,650 including VAT. ATC built it as the bass partner for its Entry Series speakers, the C1C and C3C centre channels, the HTS on-wall models and all but the largest satellite systems.

Key specs that matter

The single hand-built ATC driver measures 12 inches (314 mm) and uses a massive motor assembly and a ribbon voice coil. A 200 W class A/B amplifier powers it. ATC quotes a low-frequency cut-off of 25 Hz at minus 6 dB and a maximum SPL of 103 dB. The cabinet measures 450 mm high, 360 mm wide and 400 mm deep, figures that include the feet and heatsink, and the unit weighs 26.2 kg. Finishes are cherry and black ash real wood veneer or satin black and satin white, chosen to match the Entry Series, the centre speakers and the HTS range.

Engineering and use context

Compared with the Mk1, the re-engineered circuit gained larger power supplies and the latest ATC grounded source discrete MOSFET power module. Overload protection was improved and now shows its status on a front-panel indicator, so the sub stays under control at full output. ATC reworked the low-pass filter circuits to make it easier to blend the sub with speakers from ATC and from other brands. The user controls are gain, a continuously variable low-pass filter, a continuously variable all-pass filter for phase, and a polarity switch. Connections cover stereo speaker-level binding posts and independent left and right RCA line inputs, plus a mono summed RCA line output that allows several subwoofers to be daisy-chained. The C1 Sub Mk2 carries ATC's standard 6-year warranty.

Pairing

ATC lists the SCM7, SCM11, SCM19 and SCM40 hi-fi speakers, the C1C and C3C centre speakers and the HTS7, HTS11 and HTS40 on-wall models as intended partners. Its binding posts accept a feed taken from the loudspeaker outputs of a stereo amplifier without a dedicated sub output, while the RCA line inputs suit a preamplifier or AV receiver. Several C1 subs can share one feed through the summed output when a larger system needs more bass capacity.
