The Airmotiv XS8 is the smallest powered subwoofer in Emotiva's Airmotiv XS line, the four-model series of 8, 10, 12 and 15-inch subs that Emotiva announced in 2022 with the Airmotiv T3+ and C3+ speakers. Announced at USD 399, it is aimed at smaller rooms, stereo systems with bookshelf speakers and compact home cinema setups.
Key specs that matter
This model pairs an 8-inch long-throw woofer and 1.5-inch copper voice coil with a 250 W RMS Class A/B amplifier. The quoted response is 29 Hz to 200 Hz within ±3 dB. Signals arrive through a balanced XLR input or through two RCA sockets for Sum and LFE, which are merged inside the amplifier, and no output connections are provided. Adjustments include a crossover that goes up to 150 Hz, phase, volume, an LF Boost that spans roughly -3 dB to +9 dB at 30 Hz, and an On or Auto power mode. A voltage switch selects 115 V at 60 Hz or 230 V at 50 Hz. Emotiva gives the size as about 375 x 298 x 381 mm (HxWxD) and the boxed weight as 20.9 kg.
Engineering and use context
Although it is the entry model, the XS8 uses the same driver construction as the larger XS subwoofers. The cast aluminium chassis carries a non-pressed paper cone with aramid fibre reinforcement, an SBR rubber surround, a two-layer ferrite magnet, and a vented pole piece that blows air across the voice coil to cool it. A linear Class A/B amplifier runs from an oversized toroidal transformer, and a multi-stage limiter holds distortion low near full output and protects the driver. The heavily braced HDF cabinet is ported through a rear slot. With the power switch in Auto, a signal sensor turns the subwoofer on and puts it back into standby a few minutes after the music stops. The front is finished in satin black lacquer with a removable sculpted grille, the remaining panels are wrapped in textured vinyl, and rubber feet stop the cabinet sliding. At the rear sit an IEC mains inlet, a drawer fuse and a power switch. Warranty cover lasts five years.
Pairing
With its wide crossover range, the XS8 can extend small bookshelf speakers whose bass rolls off early. An AV receiver connects its LFE pre-out to the matching socket, and the XLR input suits studio-style preamplifiers with balanced outputs. The rear slot port should be kept clear of the wall.
Alternatives
The Emotiva Airmotiv XS10 steps up to a 10-inch driver, a 350 W RMS amplifier and a 26 Hz lower limit.
