The Airmotiv XS15 is the 15-inch subwoofer in Emotiva's Airmotiv XS range, a family of four powered models in 8, 10, 12 and 15-inch sizes launched in 2022 with the T3+ and C3+ loudspeakers. Its announced price was USD 1,099. Early announcements mentioned a 750 W amplifier and a passive radiator, but the production version uses a smaller amplifier and a rear slot port.
Key specs that matter
The XS15 uses a 15-inch long-throw driver with a 3-inch copper voice coil, powered by a 600 W RMS Class A/B amplifier. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 200 Hz at ±3 dB, the deepest rating in the XS series. One balanced XLR input and two RCA inputs for Sum and LFE feed a common internal path, and the rear panel has no outputs. The control set comprises a crossover adjustable up to 150 Hz, a phase control, volume, the LF Boost with a range of about -3 dB to +9 dB at 30 Hz, and a power mode selector with On and Auto positions. Mains operation is set to 115 V at 60 Hz or 230 V at 50 Hz. The cabinet measures about 600 x 502 x 622 mm (HxWxD), and the packed weight is 61.7 kg.
Engineering and use context
A 3-inch voice coil gives the motor a large thermal capacity, and the vented pole piece forces air through the magnet gap to cool it. The magnet is a double-stacked ferrite assembly, and the cast aluminium basket holds a non-pressed paper cone stiffened with aramid fibres and suspended by an SBR rubber surround. Amplification is linear Class A/B, fed from an oversized toroidal transformer, with a multi-stage limiter to keep distortion down and prevent overload at maximum output. The HDF enclosure is heavily braced and tuned by a slot port on the back. In Auto mode, the sub powers up on detecting a signal and returns to standby a few minutes after the signal ends. The finish combines a satin black lacquered front bezel with textured vinyl on the other panels, a removable fabric grille and permanently attached rubber feet. An IEC socket, fuse drawer and power switch sit on the rear, and Emotiva offers a five-year warranty.
Pairing
The XS15 is built for larger home cinema rooms, taking the LFE signal from a surround processor or receiver over RCA or a balanced XLR line. The deep cabinet needs a clear spot on the floor with space behind it for the rear port. There are no speaker-level connections.
Alternatives
The Emotiva Airmotiv XS12 is the next size down, with a 12-inch driver, 500 W RMS and a 24 Hz lower limit.
