The No.5.2 is a passive 3-way tower speaker made by Lansche Audio of Germany, a company co-founded by Rudiger Lansche, a trained electrical engineer and violinist who moved into loudspeaker work from telecommunications and has spent more than 40 years on speaker systems. In the current P-Series the model is offered in MKII form and is listed between the standmount No.3.2 MKII and the larger No.7.2 MKII. Like every Lansche system, it is built around the brand's own CORONA plasma tweeter.

Key specs that matter

Lansche fits one 0.3 inch CORONA plasma tweeter, a single coated papyrus midrange of 6.5 inches and one 11 inch aluminium woofer, loaded by a bass reflex cabinet. Crossover points sit at 250 Hz and 2.5 kHz. Lansche rates the system from 25 Hz to 150 kHz within 3 dB either way, with 90 dB sensitivity at 1 W and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, falling to a minimum of 5.2 ohm. The cabinet measures 123 cm high, 30 cm wide and 45 cm deep. Three piano lacquer finishes are offered - white, black and wood veneer. A pair was listed at EUR 38,850.

Engineering and use context

The upper octaves are handled without any moving diaphragm. Inside the tweeter an arc 8 mm long burns between a very small curved ring electrode in the middle of a combustion chamber, while a second electrode carrying high voltage sits outside that chamber. The arc ionises the air into a plasma cloud, and the music signal modulates the electric field so that the charged gas pushes directly on the surrounding air molecules. Lansche rates the tweeter module alone from 1.5 kHz upward, which is why the system response reaches so far above the audio band. Below the upper handover, the papyrus cone covers the midrange down to the lower crossover point, where the single long aluminium woofer takes over and works with the reflex port for the bass. The front wall of the cabinet slopes backward, a measure Lansche uses to linearise the phase response of the three drivers. The maker presents it as a design meant to fit into any living space, and at 82 kg it is the lightest of the four floorstanders in the current range.

Pairing

A nominal 8 ohm load with a moderate minimum and a fairly high sensitivity make the No.5.2 workable with most solid-state amplifiers and with many valve designs.

Alternatives

Within the same P-Series the No.7.2 MKII is the next floorstander, using twin 11 inch woofers and a 4 ohm load at 150 kg per speaker.
