The MV One Master is a one-way floorstanding speaker from Davis Acoustics, the loudspeaker maker founded in France in 1986. It is an evolved version of a design that dates back to 2012, and it is built around a single full-range driver conceived by Michel Visan, founder of the company. Davis presents this model as the ultimate creation of its founder.
Key specs that matter
All frequencies are reproduced by one 20 DE 8 driver of 21 cm nominal size, with a 222 mm diffuser, so there are no crossover filters and no overlap between several drivers. Nearly 1,000 hours of research went into optimising its magnetic motor, the weight of its moving parts and the choice of materials. Bass is reinforced by a reflex port placed on the front. Davis quotes a response of 40 Hz to 20,000 Hz within 3 dB and a sensitivity of 93.5 dB, measured in Direct mode. Impedance never falls below 8 ohms. Power handling is 150 W nominal and 200 W maximum. Each speaker is 100 cm high and 50 cm deep, and weighs 49 kg.
Engineering and use context
In plan the enclosure is trapezoidal, 27 cm wide at the front and 23 cm at the back, and it leans backwards by 7 degrees, the same tilt used across the Courbet range, which Davis applies for phase alignment. It rests on a matte black profiled base that keeps it stable. The Master version adds grounding of all metal parts, including those of the driver, to lower background noise. The speaker has three connection modes. In Direct mode the amplifier drives the full-range unit with no electronic components at all in the signal path, and the two other modes are adapted to smaller or acoustically difficult rooms. The mode is chosen at the rear connection panel. Davis states that the impedance curve is constant and the frequency response linear. A magnetic grille and decoupling spikes are supplied. Finishes are natural wood veneers in tamo ash, ebony and bamboo, plus black piano lacquer.
Pairing
According to Davis, the steady impedance makes the MV One Master compatible with all types of amplifier, including low-power designs and valve amplifiers. It is a passive design, so an external amplifier is always required.
Alternatives
Also from Davis Acoustics, the Stellar is a floorstander with three drivers, among them a 25 cm carbon fibre woofer and a 17 cm Kevlar midrange, housed in a teardrop cabinet developed by Olivier Visan over nearly four years.
