The Davis Acoustics Dhavani mk2 is the column speaker of the D-Max line, a family that the French maker places between true high efficiency designs and conventional loudspeakers. Davis, which Michel Visan set up in 1986 and which has its factory in Troyes, built the range mainly for home cinema, although the Dhavani mk2 is also meant for two-channel music. The suggested retail price is EUR 750 per speaker, and the only finish is black ash.
Key specs that matter
The three-way layout uses a compression driver at the top, a 170 mm glass fibre midrange cone and a 210 mm cellulose pulp woofer. The crossover hands over at 400 Hz and 4,000 Hz. Davis quotes 30 Hz to 20,000 Hz within 3 dB and an efficiency of 94 dB. Rated power handling is 120 W nominal and 200 W maximum. The cabinet stands 108 cm tall, 25 cm wide and 34 cm deep.
Engineering and use context
According to Davis, the compression chamber is what gives the D-Max models their comfortable efficiency and extra dynamic headroom, and the cellulose pulp woofer is chosen to reach low into the bass. The circular reflex port sits on the front baffle, a choice Davis explains by simpler positioning in the room. Terminals are screw binding posts, and the front carries mounting points for a protective grille. Davis sizes the Dhavani mk2 for rooms of 25 to 50 m2 and describes it as able to fill a large living room without a separate subwoofer. Davis gives a 5 year warranty on its speakers in France, conditional on online registration by the first owner.
Pairing
The maker states that the bass stays controlled only when a capable amplifier drives the speaker, and that the compression driver and high efficiency suit electronics built for home cinema. For a full surround system Davis names the Stentaure C mk2 centre, which uses the same cellulose cones and compression driver and reaches 95 dB, and surround speakers such as the MIA 40. The Atmosphere mk2, a bipolar model for wall mounting at about three quarters of ceiling height, is the D-Max surround option.
Alternatives
The Davis Acoustics Mani mk2 is the smaller D-Max floorstander, with a smaller cellulose woofer, 92 dB efficiency and a 90 cm tall cabinet for rooms smaller than those the Dhavani mk2 targets.
