The Motion XT F100 belongs to the Motion XT series, the upper tier of the fourth-generation Motion range that MartinLogan announced in February 2023 and presented at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show. The XT group has four models - the F200 and F100 towers, the B100 standmount and the C100 centre - and the F100 is the smaller XT tower. Its UK launch price was GBP 5,595.

Key specs that matter

Five drivers form a three-way layout, headed by a Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion XT tweeter with a 1.25 x 2.4 inch opening and a 12.4 square inch diaphragm, 40% more radiating area than the standard Folded Motion tweeter of the regular Motion models. A single 6.5-inch Nomex-reinforced Kevlar cone covers the midrange, and three 6.5-inch aluminium cones take the bass, all in cast aluminium baskets. The crossover divides the band at 280 Hz and 2,600 Hz. MartinLogan rates the response at 31 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB, sensitivity at 92 dB and impedance at 4 ohm, and recommends amplifiers of 20 to 450 W. Tweeter dispersion is 90 degrees horizontally and 45 degrees vertically. The cabinet stands 121.3 cm tall, 31.75 cm wide and 34.3 cm deep and weighs 34.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

A Folded Motion waveguide around the tweeter is meant to keep its output consistent across a wide spread of listening positions. The Kevlar midrange works in a sealed, non-resonant chamber of its own, and the three woofers sit in asymmetrical, non-resonant chambers below it. Bass loading uses a port that fires downward from the bottom of the cabinet. The McCracken-Vojtko crossover was developed from anechoic and in-room measurements together with listening tests. Height adjustment needs no tools thanks to the F.A.S.T. outrigger feet, which also have anti-vibration properties. Custom five-way binding posts in two pairs allow bi-wiring or bi-amping. Gloss black, satin white and walnut are the three finishes on offer.

Pairing

The low impedance and the high upper power limit call for a stereo amplifier or AV receiver specified to drive low-impedance loads, though the high sensitivity means modest power still gives usable levels. In a surround system the F100 is designed to sit with the Motion XT C100 centre channel and the XT B100 standmount, which share the larger XT tweeter.

Alternatives

The MartinLogan Motion XT F200 is the larger XT tower, using three 8-inch aluminium woofers for a rated low end of 27 Hz and an amplifier range up to 600 W.
