The Motion Foundation F2 is the top model of MartinLogan's Motion Foundation range, a family of five models intended for stereo and surround systems. It is a 3-way floorstanding speaker that uses a folded thin-film tweeter in place of a dome, together with aluminium cone drivers derived from the Motion XT and Motion Series. The range carries MartinLogan's aim of bringing its technologies to more accessible prices, drawing on 40 years of the company's design work. MartinLogan sells the F2 individually at USD 1,149.99 each.

Key specs that matter

Its rated response spans 36 Hz to 23 kHz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is 92 dB, and nominal impedance is 4 ohms. The crossover divides the signal at 330 Hz and 3,600 Hz. The tweeter measures 2.4 x 2.5 cm and has a diaphragm area of 22.6 cm2, with dispersion of 90 x 90 degrees. The midrange is a 14 cm aluminium cone, and bass comes from three 16.5 cm aluminium cones. Each speaker weighs 23.8 kg and stands 112 cm tall with feet fitted.

Engineering and use context

The Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S folds a thin film so that a large surface area fits into a small space. MartinLogan points to its combination of large area, low mass and low excursion. The Folded Motion waveguide around it aims to keep dispersion controlled, limiting room reflections and giving more consistent output across a wide seating area, and it also aligns the tweeter output with the midrange. The midrange unit has its own sealed chamber designed to be non-resonant, while the three woofers use a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber and a rear-ported cabinet. All cone drivers have stamped steel baskets and unibody cone construction. The towers come with adjustable spikes for levelling and stability on carpet, and an included rubber foot fits over each spike for hard flooring. Finishes are walnut with bronze trim, black with gunmetal trim and satin white with silver trim.

Pairing

MartinLogan recommends amplifiers delivering 15 to 200 W. The F2 has one pair of 5-way binding posts, which do not support a bi-wire connection. The company positions it for 2-channel systems as well as for home theatre, where the other Motion Foundation models, including the C1 centre channel with its 2.5-way anti-lobing layout, can complete a surround layout.
