Two towers make up the floorstanding part of the fourth generation of the MartinLogan Motion range, which the company announced on 14 February 2023 and first showed at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show before deliveries began late that month, and the Motion F10 is the smaller of the pair. The original Motion line dates from 2010. In the UK the F10 was introduced at GBP 2,995, while the Motion XT F100 tower of the same launch cost GBP 5,595.

Key specs that matter

The F10 splits the band three ways across four drivers. A Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion tweeter with a 1 x 1.4 inch opening and a 9.2 square inch diaphragm covers the top, a single 5.5-inch woven fibreglass cone works as the midrange, and two 5.5-inch aluminium cones handle the bass, with the handovers placed at 280 Hz and 3,000 Hz. MartinLogan specifies a response of 38 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB, 92 dB sensitivity and a nominal 4 ohm load, with a recommended amplifier range of 20 to 250 W. Tweeter dispersion is 90 degrees in both planes. The cabinet measures 97.1 cm high, 28.6 cm wide and 33.7 cm deep and weighs 22.9 kg. Finish choices are gloss black, satin white and walnut.

Engineering and use context

Compared with earlier Motion tweeters, the Gen2 Obsidian unit carries larger magnet structures intended to lower distortion and raise output, and it sits inside a Folded Motion waveguide that keeps its behaviour consistent across different seats. The midrange is loaded by its own sealed chamber, while the two bass drivers share an asymmetrical, non-resonant chamber. The enclosure is ported through the bottom rather than the front or rear. MartinLogan tuned the McCracken-Vojtko crossover by combining anechoic and in-room measurements with listening sessions. F.A.S.T. outrigger feet can be adjusted in height without tools, and both rubber feet and spikes are supplied so the speaker can stand on hard floors or carpet. Custom five-way binding posts come in two pairs so the bass and upper sections can be wired separately.

Pairing

Any amplifier or AV receiver used here should be stable into low impedance loads, although the high efficiency keeps the power needed modest within the stated window. In a home cinema the F10 matches the Motion C10 centre channel and B10 standmount, which use the same Gen2 Obsidian tweeter, and the separate bass section allows two stereo amplifiers to share the work.

Alternatives

The MartinLogan Motion F20 is the bigger tower in this Motion generation, with two 6.5-inch aluminium woofers and a rated low end of 35 Hz.
