The Lumina III is a floorstanding loudspeaker from Sonus faber's Lumina collection, launched on 8 September 2020 at USD 2,199 per pair, or GBP 1,995 in the UK. At launch it was the only tower in this entry-level series from the Italian maker, and in 2021 the larger Lumina V took over the top position in the collection.

Key specs that matter

The Lumina III is a three-way vented design. A 29 mm DAD tweeter handles the treble, a 150 mm paper cone midrange sits in a low-compression basket, and two 150 mm paper cone woofers cover the bass. The Paracross crossover divides the range at 350 Hz and 3,500 Hz and includes low-frequency impedance compensation. Frequency response is 40 Hz to 24 kHz, sensitivity is 89 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohms, with 50 to 250 W suggested for the amplifier. Bi-wire terminals and iron spikes are supplied. Each speaker is 989 mm high, 228 mm wide and 277 mm deep and weighs 15.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

The port vents through the base of the cabinet, so the air flow exits toward the floor rather than from the front or back panel. The low-compression basket gives the midrange cone more open space behind it, so air pressure behind the diaphragm is released rather than trapped. With the midrange working between the two crossover points, the two woofers handle only the lowest frequencies, sharing the load of the bass. The impedance compensation in the Paracross network evens out the load that the amplifier sees in the bass. The DAD tweeter is shared with the Lumina II stand-mount and the Lumina V tower, and the III is the only Lumina floorstander whose woofers use paper cones, since the V moves to sandwich diaphragms. Paracross is Sonus faber's name for a crossover topology that it also uses in the higher Sonetto V and VIII models. The cabinet front is built from multilayer wood with veneer, and the sides and top are covered in black leather, in the same three finishes as the Lumina II.

Pairing

Its sensitivity makes the Lumina III easy to drive for its size, and integrated amplifiers rated for this power band that remain stable into low loads are a good match for a room of about 20 m2. The base port and spikes need a firm floor, and bi-wiring allows separate cables for the bass and treble sections.

Alternatives

The Sonus faber Lumina V is the larger floorstander of the collection, replacing the paper woofers with larger sandwich units and reaching 38 Hz.
