The Amati Supreme from Sonus Faber is a tower design that grew out of the Suprema system, and its tweeter, super tweeter and midrange units are, per the maker, exactly the same drivers used in Suprema. It is handcrafted by artisans in Vicenza, Italy, and brings the Voice of Sonus Faber design approach from that larger project into a more compact cabinet.

Key specs that matter

The layout is 4.5-way. A 20 mm silk dome super tweeter and a 38 mm silk dome tweeter each sit in a dedicated waveguide and use high power neodymium magnets, a 165 mm Camelia midrange has a Dual Drive motor with a neodymium ring magnet, and two 220 mm woofers also use Dual Drive motors. Crossover points are 230, 300, 1,800 and 5,600 Hz. Quoted range is 28 Hz to 40,000 Hz, sensitivity is 91 dB SPL at 2.83 V and 1 m, and nominal impedance is 4 ohm. Recommended amplifier power spans 50 W to 600 W of undistorted signal. Each speaker stands 1,176 mm tall, 411 mm wide and 512 mm deep and weighs 62 kg.

Engineering and use context

A sealed enclosure serves the midrange, while the woofers load into a vented enclosure using the Stealth Ultraflex system. Tweeter and midrange share a dedicated volume damped with cork, a natural and sustainable material whose shape was developed by computer simulation. The midrange carries a phase plug to control behaviour through the mid band. The Phase Coherent crossover uses the identical components found in the Suprema networks, and a clear Y-shaped window on the top panel reveals the mid-high section of that crossover. The lute-shaped cabinet has aluminium flanges. MID-HIGH and MID-BASS adjusters are built discreetly into the rear panel. Finishes are Wenge, Red and Graphite wood plus matte Sabbia Oro and Terra Rossa, and the chosen finish covers the side panels and front baffle alike.

Pairing

An amplifier for the Amati Supreme should stay stable into demanding loads, and the wide recommended window allows anything from a moderate stereo amplifier to large mono blocks. Four binding posts split into Mid-Hi and Low sections, so each side can take bi-wiring or bi-amplification. Sonus Faber describes the cabinet as a compact design meant for sophisticated spaces and contemporary urban living.

Alternatives

The Serafino G2 is a smaller 3.5-way floorstander from Sonus Faber with a 150 mm midrange and two 180 mm woofers.
