The La Scala AL6 is the current La Scala in the Klipsch Heritage line, a three-way design with a horn for every band, hand-built in Hope, Arkansas. The La Scala first appeared in 1963, and the AL6 is described as the most radical redesign since that introduction, replacing the AL5 of 2018. List pricing is USD 14,998, GBP 17,999 or AUD 27,998 per pair, and Heritage Classic speakers carry a 10-year warranty.
Key specs that matter
A K-771 compression driver with a newly developed extended phase plug handles the treble. The midrange uses a cinema-grade K-1133 compression driver with a 3 inch diaphragm, one inch larger than in the AL5, mounted on a K-406M Tractrix horn with a 2 inch throat and Mumps contours for better coverage at the edges. Bass is produced by a K-281 12 inch woofer, down from 15 inch in earlier versions, in a folded horn that now also has reflex vents. Klipsch rates the response at 40 Hz to 19 kHz within 4 dB, quarter space anechoic, and the sensitivity at 103 dB with pink noise at 2.83 V and 1 m. Maximum output is 120 dB SPL. Each unit measures 994 mm high, 622 mm wide and 648 mm deep and weighs 93 kg.
Engineering and use context
The bass section is a patented horn-loaded, vented system that Klipsch says combines the efficiency of a horn with that of a ported enclosure, and it takes the low limit about 10 Hz below that of the AL5. The AL6 is passive as standard, with an internal crossover. The I/O panel, now moved to the rear, has passive and active inputs plus a passive output, letting one choose a single amplifier and tri-amplified operation through the optional Heritage Active Crossover, which costs USD 3,499 or GBP 3,499. That external unit uses DSP and time delay to bring the three horns into time and phase alignment and draws on technology from the Klipsch Jubilee. Klipsch states that the active crossover also boosts selected frequencies and balances EQ for a flat response. Book-matched natural wood veneer is offered in American Walnut, American Auburn and Black Ash.
Pairing
The recommended amplifier power is 25 to 150 W per channel, and given the high sensitivity even very small amplifiers are usable. In active mode each speaker needs three amplifier channels fed from the Heritage Active Crossover, for six channels per stereo pair.
Alternatives
The Klipsch La Scala AL5 is the previous generation, a fully horn-loaded three-way with a larger woofer, a smaller midrange compression driver and 105 dB sensitivity.
