In the Krypton range of Davis Acoustics, the Krypton 9 is a three-way column placed between the Krypton 6 and the Krypton 10. The company, set up in 1986, develops and produces its speakers in France, and the series sits halfway between its Ariane and Courbet lines. The suggested retail price is EUR 1,000 per speaker, and Davis designed it to fill a living room of 30 to 50 m2.

Key specs that matter

The enclosure holds four drivers and is reflex loaded, with a laminar port at the front. A 28 mm fabric dome tweeter and a 13 cm Kevlar midrange are shared with the other Krypton models, while two 17 cm woofers with treated cellulose pulp cones handle the bass. Crossover frequencies are 400 Hz and 4,000 Hz. Sensitivity is 93 dB and the response reaches 24,000 Hz at the top within 3 dB. Impedance is specified as 4 to 8 ohms, and power handling is 150 W nominal with 200 W maximum. Each speaker is 106 cm tall, 19 cm wide and 30 cm deep, and weighs 24 kg.

Engineering and use context

The original Krypton was a floorstanding speaker Davis created in the late 1980s, and the company says it defined the Davis house identity. The revived range keeps the Kevlar midrange as a central element. Here it is a Davis driver, with a woven membrane and a particular cone shape. The tweeter dome is made of a very fine impregnated fabric, much like silk, while a tapered rear cavity captures its back radiation. The woofers pair their light but rigid cellulose cones with a strong magnetic motor, and the rear of the enclosure is shaped to help air move freely behind them. A solid base tilts the whole cabinet a little backwards to bring the tweeter and midrange into time alignment. The speaker ships with this tilting stand, installation tools and decoupling spikes. Buyers choose between three finishes - Nordik in light wood with white or grey fabric, Classik in walnut with grey or brown fabric, and Technik in matte black.

Pairing

Within the same series Davis offers the Krypton C centre speaker for a multichannel system. The smallest floorstander of the range, the Krypton 6, uses an MDF enclosure reinforced by internal partitions, a 13 cm cellulose woofer and a front laminar vent, and at 89 cm tall and 16 kg it can serve a second room alongside a Krypton 9 system.
