The Alexx V is a Wilson Audio tower built in Provo, Utah, using several stacked modules. It is a complete re-engineering of the original Alexx, which was launched in 2016. Several of its elements were inherited from the Chronosonic XVX and from the WAMM Master Chronosonic, yet the cabinet grew only slightly, being about 2.5 cm deeper and 2.5 cm taller than its predecessor at the same width.

Key specs that matter

Per side, bass is handled by one 10.5 inch (26.67 cm) and one 12.5 inch (31.75 cm) woofer, the midrange band is split between a 7 inch (17.78 cm) and a 5.75 inch (14.61 cm) unit, and a 1 inch (2.54 cm) tweeter sits in a sealed enclosure. Wilson quotes 20 Hz to 32 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB and a sensitivity of 92 dB at 1 W, 1 m and 1 kHz. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, falling to a minimum of 2.0 ohm at 250 Hz, and the stated minimum amplifier power is 50 W per channel. Each speaker stands 161 cm tall, 40 cm wide and 68 cm deep and weighs 226.80 kg, while a crated pair ships at about 635 kg.

Engineering and use context

All enclosures are made of X-Material, with V-Material nested at the top of the woofer cabinet, in the gantry cross-brace and in the spikes. The woofer cabinet uses an XLF port that is reversible between rear and front firing, and the two midrange enclosures are vented at the rear. Upper modules can be adjusted independently. The open architecture gantry, first launched with the WAMM Master Chronosonic, is said to raise the rigidity of the upper section and reduce pressure trapped behind the enclosures, and an illuminated cross brace at its rear helps with module time alignment. The CSC tweeter is a carbon fiber design with a rear-wave chamber, produced in-house on several 3D printers. The larger midrange is an AlNiCo QuadraMag driver developed for the Chronosonic XVX, combining four separate magnets in a quadrature geometry. Crossover revisions left fewer components between input and drivers, lifting the impedance minimum from 1.5 ohm on the first Alexx and adding 1 dB of sensitivity. The Acoustic Diode spike keeps the spike and threaded post separate, with a V-Material constrained layer damping composite absorbing energy between floor and cabinet.

Pairing

With the low impedance minimum, an amplifier that copes with such a low load without strain is the logical partner, even though the efficiency means the rated power floor is modest.

Alternatives

Within the current Wilson Audio floorstanding range, the Alexia V is another multi-module design built on the same series generation.
