The Alexia V is a floorstanding loudspeaker from Wilson Audio built as a woofer enclosure topped by a separate upper array holding the midrange and tweeter modules. It succeeds the Alexia Series 2, and the company says more than thirty areas were identified and refined for this generation, drawing on work done for the Chronosonic XVX and the Alexx V, including internal bracing, panel thicknesses, enclosure volume, the crossover, levelling hardware and the drivers.
Key specs that matter
The bass section holds one 10 inch (25.4 cm) and one 8 inch (20.32 cm) woofer, the midrange is a 7 inch (17.78 cm) QuadraMag unit, and a 1 inch (2.54 cm) Convergent Synergy Carbon tweeter covers the top. Wilson gives sensitivity as 90 dB at 1 W, 1 m and 1 kHz, and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms falling to a minimum of 2.59 ohms at 84 Hz. Frequency response is 19 Hz to 33 kHz within 3 dB, quoted as a room average figure. The recommended minimum amplifier power is 20 W per channel. Each speaker stands 129.42 cm tall without spikes, 40.01 cm wide and 61.41 cm deep, and weighs 120.20 kg uncrated, while the crated pair ships at 360.61 kg.
Engineering and use context
The woofer box is ported to the rear, the midrange enclosure is vented at the back, and the tweeter sits in a sealed chamber. Wilson's X-Material composite forms all three modules, and a second composite, V-Material, is nested in the top of the woofer and midrange enclosures to reduce vibration. The Acoustic Diodes that support the woofer cabinet, new in this version, are made from austenitic stainless steel. The upper array rests on a stepped alignment block and the tweeter module sits in numbered detents, so the geometry of the drivers can be matched to the listening distance and ear height using the time alignment charts in the manual. Behind a glass cover on the rear of the woofer enclosure is a resistor panel. The midrange resistors total 1.05 ohms and the tweeter resistors 2.40 ohms, each made of two parts in parallel, setting driver levels and acting as fuses, and a 30 ohm barrel resistor sets the woofer level.
Pairing
Separate binding posts for the mid frequency and high frequency sections link the upper array to the woofer enclosure by cable. Its impedance dip in the upper bass calls for an amplifier comfortable with difficult loads.
Alternatives
Above the Alexia V in Wilson Audio's floorstanding range sits the Alexx V, another multi-module design from the same generation.
