In the Sonus Faber Sonetto series the Sonetto II is the bigger of two bookshelf speakers and ranks above the Sonetto I, and the current G2 generation of this design is made in Arcugnano near Vicenza in Italy. The range also includes the Sonetto V floorstander, a Sonetto Center channel and dedicated Sonetto Stands intended for the I and the II.

Key specs that matter

This is a 2.0-way system with a front vented box. A 1.1 inch DAD Arrow Point tweeter with a copper shorting ring handles the top octaves, and a single 6.5 inch midwoofer with an aluminium demodulation ring covers everything below the 3,100 Hz crossover. Sonus Faber quotes a range of 42 Hz to 40,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 87 dB SPL measured at 2.83 V and 1 m, and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Recommended amplifier power runs from 30 W to 200 W. Each cabinet measures 414 x 227 x 355 mm and weighs 10.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

DAD stands for Damped Apex Dome, a silk dome construction whose response the maker says extends beyond 30 kHz, and the tweeter uses a copper cup part behind the dome. The midwoofer sits in an asymmetrical organic basket shaped to let air move freely around the driver instead of being trapped behind the cone. Inside the enclosure, Intono technology is used to suppress spurious frequencies and distortion generated within the cabinet volume. The reflex duct is paired with a concrete base, and the brand states that this duct geometry was chosen to make placement near walls less critical. The enclosure has the lute profile seen across Sonus Faber lines, and the published material list names wood, leather and concrete as parts of the build. The first generation of the Sonetto II differed in several respects, with a downward-firing port, a 2,650 Hz crossover, a quoted upper limit of 25,000 Hz and a minimum amplifier rating of 40 W, so the G2 figures above apply only to the current version.

Pairing

Sonetto II owners need an amplifier stable into demanding loads, and the upper end of the stated window leaves room for a sizeable integrated or pre and power combination. A well built design near the bottom of that power range can drive the pair in a smaller space of around 20 m2. The matching Sonetto Stands are the maker's own mounting solution for this model.
