The Concertino G4 is the fourth edition of a two-way stand-mount that Sonus faber first introduced in 1994, and it belongs to the Heritage Collection of the Vicenza company. Announced on 26 July 2024 to mark the model's 30th anniversary, it reached shops in October 2024 at USD 5,000 per pair, with matching stands at USD 1,500 per pair, while European pricing was EUR 4,750 per pair or EUR 6,250 with stands. A Maestro Edition was limited to 300 pairs with numbered brass plaques.
Key specs that matter
A 1.1-inch DAD Arrow Point tweeter is used, a 25 mm silk dome with an aluminium Arrow Point phase element, and a 5.25-inch midwoofer with a cellulose pulp cone, a soft surround and a ferrite magnet covers the rest of the range. A phase-coherent crossover divides the two at 1,700 Hz. Frequency response is 60 Hz to 25 kHz, sensitivity is 85 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and Sonus faber recommends amplifiers of 30 to 150 W. Double gold-plated terminals are fitted for bi-wiring or bi-amping. Each speaker measures 314 x 214 x 297 mm and weighs 6.6 kg. The stand has a 270 x 320 mm footprint and weighs 14.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
This vented cabinet has an internal structure made of cork. Its trapezoidal shape avoids parallel side walls, and ribbed solid walnut forms the sides. Front, top and rear are covered in Ohoskin, a plant-based leather alternative made from orange and cactus byproducts, in place of animal leather. The Arrow Point element in front of the dome is designed to control phase behaviour at the centre of the tweeter. With this low crossover point, the midwoofer hands over to the tweeter low in the midrange. The stands are built from iron steel with walnut veneer accents and raise the cabinet so the whole assembly stands 1,044 mm tall, which places the tweeter well above desk level. Together a speaker and stand weigh 21.1 kg. The Concertino G4 is handcrafted in Italy.
Pairing
The modest sensitivity and low impedance make it best matched with an amplifier rated toward the top of the recommended range and stable current into low impedances, particularly in a room of 20 m2 or more. Two cable pairs or two amplifiers can serve the midwoofer and tweeter separately. For deeper bass, a subwoofer from the Gravis range can extend the low end.
Alternatives
The Sonus faber Sonetto II G2 is a bigger two-way stand-mount, using a 165 mm midwoofer, a 3,100 Hz crossover and 87 dB sensitivity.
