The Sonetto I is a bookshelf loudspeaker in the Sonetto collection from Sonus faber of Italy, now in its second generation, known as Sonetto G2. It is intended for smaller spaces and uses the lute-shaped cabinet that Sonus faber applies across the range, here redesigned for control over internal resonances. Finishes are walnut, wenge or piano black gloss, each combined with leather and concrete, and a white limited edition matte version was released as well. The open pore wood finish leaves the natural grain of the timber visible.

Key specs that matter

Sonus faber specifies a two-way layout in a front vented enclosure. A 1.1 inch DAD Arrow Point extended frequency tweeter with a copper shorting ring is paired with a single 5 inch mid-woofer fitted with an aluminium demodulation ring. The crossover point is 2100 Hz. Sonus faber rates frequency response at 52 Hz to 40,000 Hz, sensitivity at 86 dB SPL for 2.83 V at 1 m and nominal impedance at 4 ohm. Recommended amplifier power runs from 30 W to 150 W. Each speaker measures 377 mm high, 200 mm wide and 304 mm deep and weighs 8.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

For the G2 version, the mid-woofer was optimized. The reflex duct faces forward, which the company describes as optimized for this cabinet. The rubber surround carries a floral pattern around the sandwich cone, and its asymmetric shape is meant to break up the circular modes of the driver. Intono technology is used in the cabinet construction to suppress unwanted frequencies and distortion inside the enclosure, giving a quieter cabinet. The duct design was also reworked to allow more flexibility in speaker placement. A new concrete base, introduced with the G2 series, adds stability and reinforces the structure of the speaker.

Pairing

The dedicated Sonetto Stand is made of aluminium with a concrete base and iron steel parts, and it serves both the Sonetto I and the Sonetto II. It measures 687 mm high, 355 mm wide and 406 mm deep and weighs 6.5 kg. For home cinema use, the Sonetto collection includes the Sonetto III floorstander and the Sonetto Center, which share the same finishes. Any amplifier used should be comfortable with the low nominal impedance.
