The Smart Townus 2 is a fully active wireless compact loudspeaker pair from Canton, the German company whose Townus series takes its name from the Taunus region where Canton has its headquarters. Canton pitches the Smart Townus line at urban listeners and pairs its slim cabinets with rounded edges. The range reached the USA and Canada in April 2023, when it was shown at AXPONA, with the Smart Townus 2 listed at USD 1,995 per pair next to the Smart Townus 8 floorstander at USD 4,495. In Germany the pair cost EUR 1,600, or EUR 1,700 in walnut, and the pair is no longer available to order there.

Key specs that matter

The layout is two-way with a reflex port, a 154 mm bass-midrange driver using a titanium cone and wave surround, plus a 25 mm aluminium oxide ceramic dome tweeter behind a transmission front plate. Canton quotes a transmission range of 27 to 30,000 Hz. A Class D amplifier rated at 350 W sits inside each cabinet. Every speaker measures 19 x 35 x 28 cm and weighs 6 kg. Standby consumption is 0.35 W in ECO and manual modes and 1.2 W in network standby.

Engineering and use context

The two cabinets talk to each other over the Cantonet wireless link at 5 GHz, carrying two channels at 24 bit and 96 kHz or three to eight channels at 16 bit and 48 kHz, so no speaker cable runs between them. Inputs cover RCA and balanced XLR analogue, coaxial and optical digital, a USB port with XMOS technology for a computer, and Bluetooth 3.0 with aptX decoding. There is also a coaxial S/PDIF output and an RCA subwoofer output handled by integrated bass management. Decoding for Dolby Audio and DTS Digital Surround, together with the DTS TruSurround virtualiser, lets the pair take a multichannel signal from a television. The menu adds a voice function, an equaliser, dynamic range control, LipSync delay, a sleep timer and IR learning so a TV remote can operate it. A remote control, optical and coaxial cables and an analogue stereo cable come in the box. Finishes are black high gloss, white semi-gloss and walnut veneer, with magnetic oval fabric covers and screwless diamond-cut aluminium driver rings.

Pairing

The only extra box a basic system needs is a source - a TV, a streamer, a phono preamplifier with a turntable or a laptop over USB. Canton sold 2.0 and 2.1 streaming sets, and the Smart Connect 5.1 lets the pair grow into a surround layout up to 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos.
