The Smart GLE 3 S2 is a fully active two-way compact loudspeaker from Canton, part of the GLE family, delivered as a pair made up of one master unit and one slave unit that need no external amplifier or speaker cables between them. Besides stereo playback, it decodes surround formats from a television and can grow into a larger wireless Canton system.

Key specs that matter

Each speaker carries Class D amplification with a system power of 350 W, driving a 174 mm titanium bass-midrange driver and a 25 mm aluminium-manganese tweeter crossed over at 3,000 Hz. The quoted range stretches from 28 Hz to 30,000 Hz from the backfire bass reflex cabinet. A speaker measures 19 x 36 x 27.7 cm and weighs 7.7 kg. Inputs are analogue RCA, balanced XLR, digital coax and Toslink handling 24 bit and 96 kHz, USB type B with XMOS processing at 24 bit and 96 kHz, and Bluetooth 3.0 with aptX and SBC. There is also a coaxial digital output and a mono subwoofer output at 2 V.

Engineering and use context

Wave surrounds reduce losses at the driver edges, and the tweeter sits behind an acoustically optimised transmission front plate with a protective metal grille and acoustic lens to control dispersion. Multichannel bitstreams in Dolby Audio or DTS Digital Surround are decoded internally, and DTS TruSurround creates a virtual surround field from the pair. The proprietary 5 GHz Cantonet link sends two channels at 24 bit and 96 kHz or up to eight channels at 16 bit and 48 kHz to other Smart speakers, allowing a 5.1 layout at most. The menu offers per-speaker level, a voice function, an equaliser, bass management, dynamic range control, lip sync, a sleep timer, IR learning for a television remote and automatic Bluetooth selection. A scrolling text display on the front shows the operating mode, and standby draw is 0.35 W in ECO mode. Silk matt lacquered baffles combine with black or white vinyl cabinets and magnetic fabric covers.

Pairing

The analogue and digital inputs accept a television, CD player or streamer directly, while the USB port links a computer. Canton names the Smart GLE 9 S2 floorstander and Smart GLE 5 S2 centre as wireless extensions for home cinema, while the LS 860 and LS 660 floor stands fit its footprint. The Smart Connect 5.1 streamer adds Spotify Connect, Chromecast and AirPlay 2.
