The Reference 9 GS Edition is a Canton compact two-way model that joins the Reference 9 cabinet with selected components from the Reference Alpha range. GS stands for Guenther Seitz, founder of the German company, and the GS Edition series was launched in 2022 to mark fifty years of loudspeaker development. The Canton site lists one speaker at EUR 2,500.

Key specs that matter

The 25 mm tweeter has a dome coated with diamond-like carbon, DLC, and sits behind an acoustic lens that acts as an extra waveguide. Below it a 174 mm bass-midrange driver uses a Black Ceramic Tungsten cone. Canton gives a range of 25 Hz to 40,000 Hz, an impedance of 4 to 8 ohm and an efficiency of 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Load capacity is 125 W nominal and 220 W music. The cabinet with its base is 26 cm wide, 46 cm high and 39 cm deep, and one speaker weighs 18 kg.

Engineering and use context

In the Black Ceramic Tungsten process, a quarter of the aluminium cone's structure is turned into ceramic, which is then enriched with tungsten and further metal particles, aiming at a high ratio of stiffness to weight and good internal damping. The crossover is revised compared with the regular Reference 9 and carries Mundorf MKP capacitors taken from the Reference Alpha models. A switch at the rear trims the treble by plus or minus 1.5 dB. Its reflex opening points downward into an integrated Bass Guide. The multilayer cabinet has curved sides and internal bracing, and it rests on CNC-milled feet with a PVD coating. Fully gold-plated WBT nextgen binding posts take the cable, and a magnetic fabric cover protects the front. The finish options are white semi-gloss, black piano, walnut and a Sand colour exclusive to the GS Edition. Canton gives 10 years of warranty on passive Reference speakers, and the pair ships on a pallet.

Pairing

The GS Edition series also includes the Reference GS Edition and Reference 5 GS Edition floorstanders, which share the same technology base in larger three-way form. The Reference GS Edition is a 3-way bass reflex tower rated at 950 W, and the Reference 5 GS Edition is a 3-way design rated at 370 W. Alongside them Canton offers anniversary GS Editions of the Karat and Ergo lines, the Karat GS Edition as a 3.5-way system and the Ergo GS Edition as a 3-way system, both rated at 340 W. An amplifier for this model should cope with loads down to 4 ohm.

Alternatives

The standard Canton Reference 9 is the compact two-way model on which this edition is based.
