The S3000MKII is a two-way active bookshelf pair from Edifier, introduced as the successor of the S3000 Pro and certified for Hi-Res Audio. The main cabinet accepts wired and wireless sources, then sends the signal to its partner over a radio link, so the two boxes need only mains power and no connecting cable.
Key specs that matter
Every enclosure carries a horn-loaded planar magnetic tweeter measuring 107 x 107 mm and a 6.5 inch (179 mm) long-throw aluminium cone for the mid-low band, held in an aluminium basket. Rated output reaches 256 W RMS overall, allotted as 8 W x 2 to the tweeters and 120 W x 2 to the mid-low units. The quoted band runs from 38 Hz to 40 kHz, with signal-to-noise of at least 85 dB(A). Per speaker, Edifier lists 222 x 360 x 268 mm and 20 kg. Each cabinet takes 100-240 V AC, the US price is USD 999.99 and the warranty runs two years.
Engineering and use context
Power comes from dual stereo Texas Instruments PurePath Ultra-HD class D amplifiers, each rated at 175 W. An XMOS XU216 handles the complete digital signal chain and accepts material up to 24-bit/192 kHz through the USB, optical and coaxial inputs. The proprietary 5.8 GHz connection between the two cabinets carries digital audio at up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Bluetooth 5.0 adds Qualcomm aptX HD at up to 24-bit and 48 kHz, and the wired list covers balanced XLR, optical, coaxial, USB Type-B and an analogue line input. Control is shared between knobs on the cabinet, an infrared remote and the EDIFIER ConneX app, which handles playback as well as selecting and customising the preset sound effects. The box includes two power cables, the remote with two AAA batteries, and optical, RCA to RCA, 3.5 mm to RCA and USB leads. Loading the planar tweeter with a horn raises its output efficiency and narrows its dispersion compared with a bare diaphragm, and the long-throw cone gives the mid-low unit more excursion for the lowest part of the range.
Pairing
A desktop computer can drive the system over USB at full resolution, a television over optical, and a CD transport or streamer over coaxial. Studio users can connect an audio interface or mixer through the balanced XLR socket, and Android or other aptX HD phones stream without a cable. The wireless link between the pair makes wide spacing on either side of a screen or desk possible without running wire across the floor.
Alternatives
The earlier Edifier S3000 Pro uses the same per-driver amplifier allocation but relies on a KleerNet link and a planar tweeter without horn loading.
