The R1280DBs is Edifier's revised version of the R1280DB, an active two-way bookshelf set differing mainly by a subwoofer output, a sound field extension mode and a slightly lower quoted bass limit. As with the rest of the R1280 family, one speaker is active and contains the electronics while the other is a passive cabinet. The pair lists at USD 199.99 in brown or black.
Key specs that matter
Inside each enclosure there is a 4-inch mid-bass unit and a 0.5-inch (13 mm) silk diaphragm tweeter, divided by a two-way active crossover. Amplification is 21 W + 21 W RMS, 42 W for the pair. Edifier gives a frequency response of 51 Hz to 20 kHz and puts the SNR at 85 dB(A) or higher. Each cabinet measures 146 x 234 x 196 mm and weighs 4.9 kg.
Engineering and use context
The MDF enclosures are intended to cut resonance, and a front-facing reflex port supports the low end while keeping the back panel clear. The sub-out socket on the rear panel has a detection function - once a subwoofer is plugged in, the speakers' own bass output is reduced so the two do not overlap, turning the set into a 2.1 system. Wireless reception uses a Qualcomm Bluetooth chip, listed as version 5.0 in the manual. Volume and tone knobs are on the side panel of the active speaker, so settings can be changed without reaching behind the cabinet. The remote covers power, mute, volume, input selection, Bluetooth play, pause and track skipping, plus a sound field extension toggle. The status light turns green for line inputs, red for optical and coaxial and blue for Bluetooth, and holding the Bluetooth button drops the current connection.
Pairing
Input sensitivity is 500 mV on Line In 1, 600 mV on Line In 2, 350 mFFS for both S/PDIF sockets and 700 mFFS on Bluetooth. That covers a turntable through a phono stage, a CD player, a computer, and a TV or streamer over S/PDIF, with a phone as a wireless source. Powered subwoofers with a line-level input can connect to the sub-out. Edifier packs an RCA-to-RCA lead, a 3.5 mm-to-RCA lead and a fibre-optic lead with the manual, so the common sources can be wired from day one. Because the amplifier sits in one cabinet, only the active speaker needs a mains socket, and the supply voltage must match the local network.
Alternatives
The Edifier R1280DB came first, using identical drivers and amplification, with Bluetooth 5.1 and no subwoofer output.
