The S3000 Pro is a two-way powered bookshelf system from Edifier that pairs a planar tweeter with an aluminium mid-bass cone and links the left and right cabinets wirelessly, so no wire joins the two cabinets. It was on sale by mid-2019 at GBP 589 in the UK, carried a US price of USD 899.99 with a two-year warranty, and was later replaced by the S3000MKII, which Edifier describes as its successor.

Key specs that matter

The driver pair in each box is a 107 x 107 mm planar diaphragm tweeter plus a 6.5 inch (179 mm) mid-bass unit with an aluminium alloy diaphragm. Amplification is split per driver - 8 W + 8 W RMS for the treble and 120 W + 120 W RMS for the mid and bass, 256 W in total. Edifier quotes 38 Hz to 40 kHz, 85 dBA signal-to-noise and 0.3% THD+N. Width, height and depth are 232, 356 and 268 mm per cabinet, while the finish combines a matte black front and top with dark wood side panels.

Engineering and use context

All sources connect to the right speaker - balanced XLR, RCA line in, USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth 5.0 with Qualcomm aptX HD decoding. The left speaker carries only a mains inlet and power switch, since every cabinet runs from its own supply. Audio reaches it over a KleerNet wireless link working in the 5.2 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands with 22 Mbps of bandwidth. Conversion and processing use Texas Instruments parts - a PCM5242 DAC rated up to 32-bit/384 kHz, a PCM1861 ADC for the analogue inputs, and a TLV320AIC3268 DSP. Stated input sensitivity is 600 mV for line in, 1000 mV for balanced, 450 mV for Bluetooth and 400 mV for USB, optical and coaxial. Bass and treble knobs sit on the right cabinet, and the supplied wireless remote duplicates volume, bass and treble. Optical, RCA to RCA, RCA to 3.5 mm and USB cables come in the box, so a turntable preamp, a TV and a computer can be connected from the start.

Pairing

A mixing console, audio interface or preamplifier with professional outputs can use the balanced XLR socket, and the USB and optical ports take a computer or television directly. A phone or tablet streams over aptX HD, while a network streamer or CD transport can feed the coaxial socket. Because the cabinets link without wire, placement is limited only by the reach of the two mains cables.

Alternatives

The Edifier S3000MKII keeps the same amplifier split but moves to a horn-loaded planar tweeter, an aluminium basket and a proprietary 5.8 GHz link rated to 24-bit/96 kHz.
