Perlisten Audio lists the R5m as the only monitor of its R-series, a line that also includes towers, centre channels, a bookshelf model, surrounds, subwoofers and in-wall speakers. Perlisten describes it as carrying trickle-down technology from its S-Series, and positions it for two-channel listening, as the core of a 2.1 system, as the LCR trio of a home theater or as surrounds in a larger R-series installation. The only finish is piano black, and certification covers two THX levels, Dominus and Ultra.

Key specs that matter

This is a 3-way design. A DPC-Array of three 26 mm silk domes sits between two 165 mm woofers with HPF diaphragms. Sensitivity is 89.2 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and the impedance is 4 ohm nominal with a minimum of 2.7 ohm. Response linearity is held within +/-1.5 dB from 80 Hz to 20 kHz across a listening window. The -10 dB range is 40 Hz to 32 kHz in bass reflex form and 47 Hz to 32 kHz in acoustic suspension form, with typical in-room bass extension of 37 Hz and 43 Hz respectively. Height is 546 mm, width 230 mm and depth 336 mm, with a weight of 17.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

The DPC-Array exists to control directivity, and Perlisten states that the three-dome arrangement is matched with all other R-series speakers. The silk diaphragms of the domes were developed from the ground up for this role, and the proprietary HPF pulp used for the woofer cones took two years to develop. The enclosure alignment is not fixed - the R5m can run vented as a bass reflex speaker or closed as an acoustic suspension design, depending on the owner's preference. Perlisten rates the maximum output at 113.2 dB peak above 100 Hz, with second and third harmonic distortion below 3 percent. The cabinet is designed for use on an optional stand or on a wall with a Perlisten tilt and swivel bracket.

Pairing

Perlisten recommends amplifier power of 100 W to 250 W RMS. Within the same R-series, Perlisten offers subwoofers from the R8s and R10s up to the R15s, R18s, R210s and R212s for a 2.1 or multichannel layout, the R5c and R7c centre channels, the R4s surround model and the R5t and R7t towers. A complete system can therefore be built from one range around a pair or several pairs of R5m monitors, all from the same maker.
