The R4b is the compact three-way bookshelf speaker of Perlisten's R-Series, the reference line that sits between the top S-Series and the entry A-Series. It carries the Directivity Pattern Control array developed for the S-Series into a smaller cabinet, and it holds THX Ultra certification, which verifies output and distortion targets for home cinema rooms.
Key specs that matter
The DPC array uses three 26 mm silk domes, with a 165 mm woofer made from Perlisten's HPF pulp. The enclosure is acoustic suspension. Sensitivity is 84.6 dB at 2.83 V/1 m, nominal impedance is 4 ohms with a 3.8 ohm minimum, and the recommended amplifier power is 50 W to 200 W RMS. Response linearity is within 1.5 dB from 80 Hz to 20 kHz, the -10 dB limits are 45 Hz and 32 kHz, and typical in-room bass extension is 38 Hz. Peak output is 107.6 dB at 1 m. The cabinet measures 382 x 230 x 236 mm (H x W x D), at 9.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
In the DPC array the centre dome handles frequencies above 4.4 kHz, while the two flanking domes cover 1.25 kHz to 4.4 kHz. Working together, the three domes narrow vertical dispersion, which cuts reflections from floor and ceiling, and shape horizontal dispersion to limit energy directed at side walls. Using small domes for the midrange also avoids the break-up behaviour of a larger midrange cone. The 165 mm woofer takes over below 1.25 kHz. Its HPF pulp cone took two years to develop and brings new processing to one of the oldest materials in loudspeaker design. The sealed cabinet gives a gentler bass roll-off than a ported box and makes the speaker less sensitive to nearby walls, which suits wall mounting on Perlisten's tilt-swivel bracket as well as stand placement. Because the R4b shares its array with every R-Series model, it matches the towers and centre in a surround system. The finish is piano black.
Pairing
Low sensitivity and a 4 ohm load mean the R4b needs more power than its size suggests, so an amplifier with strong output into low impedances is the practical starting point. Perlisten designed it for use with a subwoofer, crossed where its flat range begins, and it also works as the LCR set of a small cinema room. Three R4b units across the front with R-Series towers or subwoofers keep the same dome array on every channel. Perlisten's matching stand or the wall bracket sets the array at seated ear height.
Alternatives
Perlisten's R5m is the larger R-Series monitor with more bass output for bigger rooms.
