Engineering and use context

Cabinets are made entirely of MDF, which Edifier selected to limit acoustic resonance. A flared bass reflex port on the front baffle works with the woofer, and placing it on the front leaves the rear free, so the speakers can stand closer to a wall than rear-ported designs. Bass, treble and master volume dials are fitted on the side of the active speaker, and holding the volume control puts the system into standby. The wireless remote handles power, mute, volume, direct input selection and track control in Bluetooth mode. An indicator light shows the input in use - green for the two line inputs, red for optical or coaxial and blue for Bluetooth. Bluetooth 5.1 supports the A2DP and AVRCP profiles, with an effective range of about 10 m, and a PIN of 0000 is used if a source device asks for one. The remote runs on a CR2025 coin cell.

Pairing

Five sources can be connected. Two RCA line inputs are rated at 450 mV and 550 mV, letting a record deck via its phono preamp and a CD player or computer remain connected together. Optical and coaxial digital inputs accept a TV, game console or streamer with S/PDIF output, which avoids the analogue output stage of those devices. Phones and tablets stream over Bluetooth. The box includes a 3.5 mm to RCA cable, an RCA to RCA cable and an optical cable, so most sources can be connected without extra purchases. Tone can be trimmed with the bass and treble dials to suit the connected source. There is no subwoofer output, and external amplifiers are not used with this powered pair.
