The PMC6 is the compact two-way active nearfield in the studio range of PMC, the British loudspeaker company whose monitors are used in recording and mixing rooms. It was designed for smaller control rooms and for use as one channel among many in large multichannel installations, and it can stand upright or lie on its side. A PMC8 SUB can be added later to turn it into a PMC6 XBD system that reaches down to 25 Hz.

Key specs that matter

A PMC 150 mm (6 inch) studio 6 bass driver with 20 mm of excursion works with a 27 mm fabric soft-dome tweeter set in a shallow waveguide. Each driver has its own 200 W rms Class-D amplifier. The bass unit is loaded by a 1.8 m transmission line, measured as effective length. Rated response is 39 Hz to 25 kHz at minus 3 dB, measured at 1 m on axis, and a +4 dBu input produces 98 dB SPL at 1 m. Maximum continuous output is 106 dB and peak output 118 dB. Measured at the minus 6 dB points at 10 kHz, coverage spans 60 degrees either side horizontally, 50 degrees up and 40 degrees down. In portrait orientation the cabinet is 400 mm high, 215 mm wide and 372 mm deep, and it weighs 11.1 kg. Power draw is 35 W at idle and 400 W at most, from mains between 100 and 240 V.

Engineering and use context

The bass driver was designed specifically around PMC's current ATL loading and its Laminair airflow vents. The DSP engine detects whether the cabinet is upright or horizontal and adjusts the crossover to suit, and the orientation can also be set manually. Other controls cover a 10 dB trim range either way, a high-pass filter adjustable from 20 to 200 Hz, delay up to 30 ms, polarity, shelving filters at both ends of the band and five parametric EQ bands, with three user presets and 2.4 ms latency. All of this is available from the rear panel or remotely through the SoundAlign browser software over an RJ45 network port. A ceiling-mount yoke allows the speaker to be suspended overhead in surround rigs, and a spare card slot allows later connectivity upgrades.

Pairing

The single XLR input accepts either analogue signals with a selectable maximum of +20 or +24 dBu at 22 kOhm, or AES3 digital at 16 or 24 bit between 18 and 192 kHz, and a digital through output at 24 bit and 96 kHz can feed the next speaker or a sub. An audio interface or monitor controller is therefore the only electronics needed.

The PMC result6 is a simpler two-way active nearfield without DSP user settings, using 65 W and 100 W amplifiers and a 170 mm bass driver.
