The PMC 6-2 is an active three-way nearfield reference monitor from the British company PMC, built around the ATL bass-loading system that the brand uses across its studio and home ranges. It is the three-way sibling of the two-way PMC 6 and is sold as a pair, with a listed price of USD 11,825 per pair. A ceiling-mount yoke is part of the design, so the cabinets can be suspended in multi-channel and surround installations besides standard use in two-channel monitoring.
Key specs that matter
Two 150 mm PMC Studio 6 long-throw drivers with 20 mm of excursion form the low-frequency section. Above them sits the 55 mm PMC55 soft-dome midrange with an N-compass waveguide, and a 27 mm soft-dome tweeter handles the highest band. PMC quotes a response of 33 Hz to 25 kHz at -3 dB, measured on axis at 1 m in full space. Maximum continuous output is 109 dB SPL at 1 m and maximum peak output is 121 dB SPL at 1 m, both in full space to IEC conditions. Class D amplification drives every section separately, and the woofers get two channels of their own.
Engineering and use context
Both woofers feed a 2 m ATL line, and the line exits through a Laminair vent whose flow-shaped fins are meant to reduce turbulence at the outlet. Signal handling is digital inside the cabinet. A DSP crossover splits the bands and also provides driver protection, equalisation, and delay and polarity options. Input is either analogue or AES3 digital, and the AES3 path accepts 16 or 24 bit data at sample rates from 18 kHz to 192 kHz. A digital through output passes an AES3 stream at 24 bit and 96 kHz on to the next monitor in a chain. Settings for one speaker or a whole group are handled through the SoundAlign network control interface, and browser-based software gives access to boundary controls and custom EQ curves without touching the rear panel.
Pairing
With amplifiers and DSP inside each cabinet, the 6-2 needs only a line-level or AES3 source such as an audio interface, a monitor controller or a DAC with a volume stage. For extended low end PMC offers the 8.2 Sub, and in XBD mode with that subwoofer the system response reaches down to 25 Hz. The through output lets several units share one digital feed in a larger multi-speaker layout.
Alternatives
The PMC 6 is the two-way model of the same studio range, using one 6-inch bass driver and a 1-inch tweeter on a pair of 200 W Class D amplifiers with a quoted lower limit of 39 Hz.
