The result6 is a two-way active nearfield reference monitor designed and hand-built in Britain by PMC, which positions it as the introduction to its studio range and to its ATL bass-loading method. The design deliberately leaves out complex DSP user menus and room profiles and relies on the acoustic and electronic engineering alone, with the stated aim of letting engineers finish mixes faster. PMC lists uses from music and speech recording to broadcast vans, radio and TV control rooms, post-production, mastering, home theatre and domestic listening.
Key specs that matter
Two drivers cover the band - a 170 mm (6.5 inch) woofer with a light, stiff doped natural fibre cone and a 27 mm precision soft-dome tweeter, divided at 2 kHz. Built-in Class-D amplification totals 165 W, with 100 W rms for the bass unit and 65 W rms for the tweeter. PMC quotes 45 Hz to 22 kHz and a peak level of 112 dB at 1 m. The transmission line behind the woofer is 1.5 m long in effective terms. Input impedance is above 8 kOhm. Each cabinet is 380 mm high, 199 mm wide and 360 mm deep and weighs 8 kg.
Engineering and use context
A perforated acoustic lens in front of the tweeter extends its output beyond 20 kHz and controls dispersion around the crossover region. Around it sits a finned surround PMC calls D-Fins, or Diffraction Fins, developed for this model to block reflections from the cabinet edges and keep the off-axis response even over a wider area. The analogue crossover uses 24 dB per octave slopes, and the signal path also includes RFI and EMI filtering, a level trim of plus or minus 10 dB and a dual-band power limiter with driver protection sensors. The front power LED glows white in normal use and turns red on a fault, and a second red LED shows when the limiter is working. Inside the ATL cabinet the woofer sits near one end of a long damped cavity, and the lowest frequencies leave through a large front vent in the same polarity as the cone. Registration within 10 days of purchase brings a 20-year warranty.
Pairing
Audio enters through one electronically balanced XLR input wired pin 1 screen, pin 2 hot and pin 3 cold, so the monitors connect straight to the line outputs of an audio interface, console or monitor controller that sets the volume. The IEC C14 mains socket with its own switch accepts any voltage from 90 to 260 V, and a tilting BRKT wall bracket is offered.
Alternatives
The PMC6 is the more advanced two-way active nearfield in the same studio line, adding 200 W per driver, DSP control and an AES3 digital input.
