The PMC 8-2 is an active three-way studio monitor from PMC, the British manufacturer known for loading bass drivers with its Advanced Transmission Line (ATL). It is designed for professional mixing, mastering and post-production rooms, and although it is technically a stand-mount monitor, each cabinet weighs close to 45kg and delivers bass extension normally associated with large floorstanding or soffit-mounted systems.
Key specs that matter
Each monitor uses two 8-inch long-throw bass drivers, a 2-inch soft-dome midrange and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. Four channels of 400W Class D amplification drive the three sections, controlled by an onboard DSP crossover. Frequency response is 25Hz to 25kHz (-3dB), maximum continuous SPL is 113dB and maximum peak SPL is 125dB. Directivity is +/-45 degrees horizontally and +/-50 degrees vertically. Analogue and AES3 digital inputs are provided.
Engineering and use context
ATL loading places the rear of the bass drivers at the start of a long, folded, heavily damped internal line that ends in a vent on the front baffle. The line absorbs the upper part of the rear wave while the vent reinforces the lowest frequencies, extending bass without the fast phase change and port resonances of a conventional reflex box. This is how the 8-2 reaches deep bass from a cabinet compact enough for stands. Using a dedicated 2-inch soft-dome midrange, the same PMC55 midrange and tweeter pairing shared with the smaller 6-2, gives wide, controlled dispersion across the vocal band. The onboard DSP handles crossover filtering, with settings accessible on the monitor or through PMC's browser-based SoundAlign software, and because amplification is built in, each driver has its own amplifier channel with no passive crossover between them. PMC's stated engineering aim for the range is to keep resonances from the cabinet and distortion from the electronics to a minimum.
Pairing
As a fully active monitor, the 8-2 needs only a line-level or AES3 digital source such as an audio interface, monitor controller or preamplifier. Its matching dispersion lets it be combined with smaller PMC active monitors in multichannel and Atmos layouts. The 8-2 XBD configuration adds a dedicated bass cabinet for about 6dB more low-frequency headroom. The size and weight suit medium to large control rooms or dedicated listening rooms.
Alternatives
PMC's own 6-2 shares the same midrange, tweeter, DSP and amplification in a smaller cabinet for more compact rooms.
