The PMC 6 XBD is a three-way active mid-field reference monitoring system from PMC in which two cabinets work as one loudspeaker. Each side pairs a PMC6 active two-way monitor with a PMC8 SUB dedicated active subwoofer, and a DSP mode called XBD merges the two units into a single larger-scale monitor with ATL bass loading. The result is a free-standing, full-range system that extends the compact PMC6 into a full-range monitor.
Key specs that matter
The system response is 25 Hz to 25 kHz at the minus 3 dB points, taken at 1 m on axis in full space. The PMC6 on its own reaches 106 dB continuous and 118 dB peak at 1 m, while the PMC8 SUB reaches 109 dB and 121 dB, and a +4 dBu input yields 98 dB SPL at 1 m from each unit. Class-D amplifiers drive every section, with 200 W for the high frequencies and 200 W for the low frequencies in the PMC6, plus 300 W in the XBD subwoofer. The PMC6 uses a bespoke 6 inch bass driver with 20 mm of excursion and a one-inch precision-built fabric soft-dome tweeter.
Engineering and use context
ATL, the Advanced Transmission Line, is the bass loading PMC uses to extend low frequencies without a conventional port or sealed box. The vents use Laminair, an aerodynamic design that removes air turbulence at the line exit. The two amplifiers inside the PMC6 are described as ultra-low-distortion types with a high damping factor. The PMC8 SUB carries a 200 mm studio driver covering the range up to 500 Hz, and it measures 266 x 551 x 440 mm and weighs 18.5 kg. The PMC6 is 400 x 215 x 372 mm and 11.1 kg, and it can be set up upright or on its side. Further configuration is carried out in SoundAlign, a browser-based control application reached over a LAN connection, so settings can be adjusted from a computer on the studio network. A ceiling-mount yoke on the PMC6 allows it to be suspended, which PMC intends for multi-channel installations.
Pairing
Signals enter through the PMC6, which accepts analogue as well as AES3 digital input at 16 or 24 bit and sample rates from 18 to 192 kHz. Each unit also has an AES3 digital XLR output at 24 bit and 96 kHz and an RJ45 network port. Onboard DSP offers high-pass filtering from 20 to 200 Hz, delay of 0 to 30 ms, phase control, LF and HF shelving filters, a five-band parametric EQ and three user presets.
Alternatives
PMC also makes the PMC 6-2 XBD, which pairs the three-way PMC6-2 active monitor, with twin ultra-long-throw bass drivers, a PMC55 2 inch soft-dome midrange and a tweeter, with a PMC8-2 subwoofer.
