The PMC 6-2 XBD is a twin-cabinet active monitor system from the British company PMC, formed by placing a PMC6-2 three-way studio monitor on top of a PMC8-2 SUB bass cabinet. In the XBD configuration the sub reinforces the output of the main speaker's own bass drivers rather than acting as a separate subwoofer, which raises headroom and extends the low-frequency limit of the system. PMC aims it at high-end music production in near and midfield positions.
Key specs that matter
The upper cabinet carries two PMC 150 mm (6 inch) studio 6 bass drivers, a 55 mm soft-dome midrange and a 27 mm soft-dome tweeter, loaded by a 2 m effective transmission line. Its Class-D amplifiers deliver 400 W rms to each bass driver, 400 W rms to the midrange and 400 W rms to the tweeter. On its own the PMC6-2 is rated 33 Hz to 25 kHz, gives 98 dB SPL at 1 m from a +4 dBu input, and reaches 109 dB continuous and 121 dB peak. Dispersion is plus or minus 50 degrees horizontally. The monitor measures 400 x 430 x 372 mm and weighs 21.3 kg, while the PMC8-2 SUB beneath it has a 3 m line, covers 25 Hz to 500 Hz, reaches 115 dB continuous and measures 534 x 551 x 440 mm at 37.5 kg. Both cabinets accept mains from 100 to 240 V, and the monitor draws 50 W at idle and up to 1500 W.
Engineering and use context
Wiring is simple - the source feeds the PMC6-2, and an AES3 cable carries its digital through output down to the sub. The two units then link either over a LAN or directly through their network ports, and selecting XBD mode in the DSP merges them into one larger monitor. Settings can be made on the rear panel or in the browser-based SoundAlign software, where the pair appears as a single PMC 6-2 XBD. The DSP provides a trim of plus or minus 10 dB, a 20 to 200 Hz high-pass filter, up to 30 ms of delay, polarity inversion, low and high shelving filters, five bands of parametric EQ and three user presets, with a total latency of 2.4 ms. An expansion card slot is reserved for future connection options.
Pairing
The XLR input switches between analogue signals up to +20 or +24 dBu at 22 kOhm and AES3 digital audio at 16 or 24 bit and 18 to 192 kHz, so an audio interface, monitor controller or console can connect without an external amplifier. PMC offers optional floor stands for the XBD stack.
Alternatives
The PMC 8-2 XBD is the larger twin-cabinet system, pairing the PMC8-2 monitor with twin 8 inch bass drivers and the same sub for up to 6 dB more headroom.
