The MR5 is a powered three-way studio monitor pair from Edifier, placed in the MR range above the two-way MR3 and aimed at desks, small studios and hi-fi shelves alike. One cabinet carries all electronics and inputs, while its partner is passive and takes its drive through a connecting speaker cable. Edifier lists the pair at USD 349.99 in black or white.
Key specs that matter
The driver set per box comprises a 5-inch woofer, a 3.75-inch midrange driver and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter. Six amplifier channels, two per band, are allotted - 30 W + 30 W for the woofers, 15 W + 15 W for the midrange units and 10 W + 10 W for the tweeters, adding up to 110 W RMS. Quoted frequency response runs from 46 Hz to 40 kHz, maximum level is 101 dB at 1 m, and Edifier states an SNR of 85 dB(A) or more. The active speaker measures 159 x 264 x 280 mm, the passive one 159 x 264 x 257 mm, and the two together weigh 10.38 kg.
Engineering and use context
Filtering happens in the digital domain, with an active three-way crossover set at 155 Hz between woofer and midrange and at 2,600 Hz between midrange and tweeter. Since each driver gets a dedicated amp channel, there are no passive crossover parts between the output stage and the cones. A DRC stage in the DSP limits the output as levels rise. The tweeter sits in a dimpled waveguide that Edifier says widens the listening area. The pair carries Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification, handling 24-bit/96 kHz signals. Bluetooth 6.0 with multipoint lets two devices stay connected at once, and LDAC runs at up to 990 kbps next to SBC. Two preset voicings plus user EQ curves are available through the EDIFIER ConneX app, which also covers playback control. A headphone output on the active speaker allows private listening without an extra amplifier.
Pairing
The rear panel takes balanced XLR and balanced 1/4-inch TRS lines at 1,228 mV sensitivity, unbalanced RCA at 700 mV and a 3.5 mm stereo AUX jack at 600 mV. Audio interfaces with balanced outputs suit the XLR or TRS sockets, while a streamer, CD player or turntable with phono stage can use the RCA pair. Phones and tablets can stream wirelessly, and a computer can use either Bluetooth or the AUX socket. The box contains a 3.5 mm cable, the speaker link cable and a 3.5 mm to RCA lead.
Alternatives
The Edifier MR4 is a smaller two-way monitor from the same MR line for desks with less depth to spare.
