The Edifier MR3 is a small powered two-way monitor pair aimed at desks, home studios and nearfield listening, sold as one active and one passive cabinet. It carries Hi-Res Audio certification, comes in black or white, and was listed in the US at USD 149.99 per pair.

Key specs that matter

Each cabinet houses a 3.5-inch mid-low driver and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter, and bi-amplified Class D electronics supply 18 W plus 18 W RMS. Edifier specifies a frequency response of 52 Hz to 40 kHz, a maximum level of 92.5 dB at 1 m and an S/N figure better than 85 dB(A). Wired sources plug into a balanced quarter-inch TRS input, unbalanced RCA or a 3.5 mm AUX socket, and Bluetooth 5.4 with the SBC codec can hold two devices connected at the same moment. The active speaker is 125.5 mm wide, 220 mm high and 185 mm deep, the passive one is 9 mm shallower at 176 mm, and Edifier quotes a net weight of 3.85 kg.

Engineering and use context

The analogue input stage and the Class D amplifier both come from Texas Instruments and are configured to operate at 24-bit and 96 kHz. The enclosures are built from MDF, a material Edifier chose to limit cabinet resonance and distortion. Dimpled waveguides surround the tweeters to keep the upper response flat and extend it further. The powered box drives its unpowered twin over the speaker connecting cable packed with the pair. A multi-function knob on the front panel switches power, sets volume and changes sound modes, and next to it is a headphone output, so a listener can switch to headphones without reaching behind the desk. The Edifier ConneX app adds playback control and user EQ over Bluetooth.

Pairing

Input sensitivity is 1228 mV, equivalent to +4 dBu, on the TRS jacks and 775 mV on both the RCA and AUX inputs, with the Bluetooth path at 800 mFFs, which means a USB audio interface with balanced outputs can drive the pair directly at professional level. A computer sound card, a phone or a small DAC connects through the RCA or AUX inputs using the included 3.5 mm to RCA and 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm leads. There is no optical, coaxial or USB input, so digital sources need an outboard DAC first, and a record player needs a phono preamplifier ahead of the RCA socket. Edifier provides a two-year warranty in the US.
