The Heritage Special is a limited-edition two-way standmount from Dynaudio, built in a run of 2,500 pairs as part of the company's Heritage Collection. Its styling and engineering refer back to earlier Dynaudio models such as the first Contour of 1986, the Crafft of 1989, the Special Twenty-Five of 2002 and the Sapphire of 2008. Cabinets, drivers and crossovers are all produced by hand by Dynaudio staff in Skanderborg, Denmark, and the parts for each pair are selected and numbered together so the two speakers match.

Key specs that matter

Dynaudio fits its 28 mm Esotar 3 tweeter above an 18 cm woofer whose cone is moulded from Magnesium Silicate Polymer, or MSP. Sensitivity is 85 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, the nominal load is 4 ohm, and power handling under the IEC long-term method reaches 200 W. Frequency response is quoted as 42 Hz to 23 kHz within 3 dB. A first-order network crosses over at 2,200 Hz, feeding a reflex cabinet that vents at the back. Each speaker is 208 mm wide, 385 mm tall and 320 mm deep, with 337 mm of total depth when fitted with its feet and front cover, and weighs 11 kg. The grille is black.

Engineering and use context

The cabinet panels are 19 mm MDF with internal bracing and a bitumen lining to damp resonances, faced outside with hand-matched American walnut veneer. The Esotar 3 combines a neodymium magnet with the Hexis inner dome. The woofer, designated 18W75 XL, has an exponential cone profile taken from the Evidence Platinum, an aluminium voice coil wound on a glass-fibre former, a hybrid motor that mixes neodymium and ferrite magnets, and an aramid fibre spider. Daniel Emonts designed a dedicated first-order crossover for this model using Mundorf parts, including Evo Oil capacitors in the critical signal path, with individual impedance correction and time alignment built in. Internal wiring is 12 AWG Van den Hul cable, the cabinet is filled with Swedish polyester damping, and the connection panel is brushed aluminium carrying WBT 710 Cu mC nextgen binding posts.

Pairing

A low nominal impedance combined with modest sensitivity points to amplification with good current reserve that remains stable into low loads, which favours transistor integrateds or separates over a low-output valve design. The generous power handling leaves room for sizeable amplification. As the port is on the back, stands placed with space behind the cabinet suit it better than shelf mounting.

Alternatives

The Dynaudio Special Forty is another anniversary standmount, using an Esotar Forty tweeter and a 17W75 MSP woofer with 86 dB sensitivity and a 6 ohm rating.
