The Guarneri G5 is the fifth generation of the Guarneri, a two-way stand-mount speaker belonging to the Homage collection from Sonus faber of Italy. The cabinet keeps the lute shape associated with the model and is finished in high gloss lacquered wood with black leather and aluminium details. Sonus faber sells a dedicated stand for it as a separate product.

Key specs that matter

Its two-way vented box follows the Stealth Ultraflex principle. A 28 mm high power neodymium tweeter with an extended range soft dome and DAD Arrow Point works with a 150 mm mid-woofer on a neodymium magnet system, and the crossover point sits at 2200 Hz. Frequency response is rated at 40 Hz to 35,000 Hz, with sensitivity of 86 dB SPL for 2.83 V at 1 m and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Sonus faber recommends 30 W to 125 W of undistorted amplifier power. Each speaker is 377 mm high, or 1135 mm on its stand, 239 mm wide and 375 mm deep, and weighs 16 kg. The packed pair weighs 49 kg.

Engineering and use context

For the G5, Sonus faber introduced a new mid-woofer with a neodymium motor system and a new port tuning frequency, both aimed at control and low distortion. The Damped Apex Dome tweeter uses a silk soft dome whose apex is damped to avoid anti-phase behaviour at high frequencies. The Phase Coherent crossover, rated at level 3 by the maker, is built with hand soldered, custom specification capacitors and inductors, and Sonus faber states that it was designed to lower the noise floor and to manage high power levels. Stealth Ultraflex refers to the exponential duct section of the port, intended to improve airflow. Extruded aluminium parts, finished in deep grey brushed aluminium, add structural rigidity to the cabinet. Four binding posts on the back are divided into high and mid-low sections, and ZVT spikes handle decoupling.

Pairing

The Guarneri Stands were made specifically for this model and use a carbon fibre construction. It is possible to run separate cables to the high and mid-low posts, or feed each section from a separate amplifier channel. Given its low nominal impedance and moderate sensitivity, an amplifier with real current reserves suits the Guarneri G5 better than a low-power design.
