The FAZON SAT is a compact two-way satellite loudspeaker from DALI, housed in a die-cast aluminium enclosure and intended for stereo, TV sound or a multichannel surround system. DALI lists it among its on-wall models, yet it also ships with a table stand for use on a shelf or sideboard. The drivers of the FAZON series borrow from the MENTOR and IKON ranges, and the cabinet has a curved, high-gloss lacquered shell with a coated composite front baffle.

Key specs that matter

One 4.5-inch woofer covers bass and midrange, and a 28 mm soft dome tweeter takes over above a crossover point of 1,800 Hz. Frequency range is 86 Hz to 25,000 Hz within plus or minus 3 dB. Sensitivity is 86 dB measured at 2.83 V and 1 m, nominal impedance is 6 ohms, and maximum SPL at 1 m is 104 dB. DALI suggests amplifiers delivering 20 to 120 W. The enclosure is a closed box. Wall-mounted, one speaker measures 26.0 x 14.0 x 14.0 cm (H x W x D), rising to 29.0 x 14.6 x 17.2 cm on its stand, and it weighs 2.35 kg. The current finish is Chalk White, and an Iron Black version has also been sold.

Engineering and use context

Aluminium is stiffer than MDF or plastic, so the walls can be made thinner. DALI uses the space this frees inside for internal bracing and for solid bases that support the baffle and the bracket joint. The curved panels avoid parallel surfaces, which DALI says limits internal reflections and standing waves. The woofer cone is a blend of fine-grain paper pulp and wood fibres, giving a light, stiff membrane with an uneven structure that spreads out surface resonances. The tweeter dome is larger than usual yet low in mass, and the bigger diameter lowers its resonance frequency so it meets the woofer more easily at the crossover. The supplied Twist 'n' Tilt bracket pivots through 360 degrees, tilting up, down or sideways, and even allows mounting upside down. The grille is held by magnets, and push-button terminals take a single pair of wires.

Pairing

Since its rated range ends well above the deepest bass, the FAZON SAT is built to work with a subwoofer that handles the lowest octaves, and DALI offers subwoofers in its own catalogue for this role. Its nominal impedance sits above the common 4 ohm figure, so an AV receiver or a compact stereo amplifier within DALI's suggested power window can drive it. Several units, wall-mounted on the pivoting brackets, can make up the speaker set of a multichannel surround system.
