The Børresen 01 Cryo Edition sits between the plain and silver versions of the compact 01 stand-mount speaker by the Danish maker Børresen Acoustics. Priced at EUR 31,700 per pair, it costs EUR 2,000 more than the untreated 01 and well below the EUR 43,000 Silver Supreme Edition. The drivers, cabinet and crossover follow the regular model, and the difference lies in how every metal part inside is processed before assembly.

Key specs that matter

Published figures are identical to the base 01. Frequency range is 50 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity 86 dB at 1 W, impedance stays above 6 ohm and the maker calls for an amplifier of more than 50 W. Each enclosure measures 36.8 x 18.4 x 41.5 cm (height, width, depth) and weighs 11.5 kg, finished in walnut veneer, with single-wire binding posts at the rear. The treatment covers all metal components, and Audio Group Denmark quotes a gain in electrical conductivity of 6 to 8 percent from the process.

Engineering and use context

The cryogenic cycle runs for three days, or 72 hours in total. During the first 24 hours the parts are cooled gradually from room temperature to cryogenic level. In the second day they are held at around -196 degrees Celsius, and over the final 24 hours they return slowly to room temperature. The company stresses that the slow cooling and warming is what avoids thermal stress in the parts. According to Børresen, the extreme cold makes the crystal structure of the metal contract, pushes alloying elements out of the grain structure and strengthens and compresses the grains, while relieving residual stress that forms when the metal solidifies from its liquid state. The copper pole rings of the iron-free mid-bass motor are kept in this edition - it is the Silver Supreme version that swaps them for silver. The ribbon tweeter crosses over at about 2.5 kHz, where the maker specifies an efficiency of 94 dB for it.

Pairing

The electrical load does not change with the treatment, so amplifier choice follows the same logic as for the base 01 - an amplifier with the same power reserve, stable into the same moderate load. Because sensitivity is unchanged, a very low-powered valve amplifier remains a poor fit, and a transistor design with current reserve is the more practical choice for a room of about 20 m2. Børresen offers a dedicated stand for the 01 at USD 5,500 per pair.
