The Børresen C1 is a compact two-driver speaker meant for stands, designed in Denmark by Børresen Acoustics within Audio Group Denmark. As a member of the C series, it was priced at EUR 15,000, USD 17,500 or GBP 15,000 per pair, with a matching stand included in the package. It sits in a lower price band than the 0 series, but takes over the same ribbon tweeter family and the serial crossover principle used across the brand.
Key specs that matter
The C1 carries the RP94 ribbon planar tweeter, which has a moving mass of 0.01 g, works from about 2.5 kHz upward and is rated at 94 dB efficiency on its own. Below it, the DCC5 Neo mid-bass driver of five inches uses a three-layer sandwich cone, with an aramid honeycomb core set between two skins of carbon fibre. Børresen quotes a range of 45 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity of 87 dB per watt, impedance above 6 ohm and a need for more than 50 W of amplifier power. The speaker measures 469 x 204 x 430 mm (height, width, depth) and weighs 18 kg, and on its stand the assembly reaches 705 x 297 x 433 mm.
Engineering and use context
The C1 relies on a serial crossover rather than the usual parallel network, a design that diverts out-of-band currents and keeps the current flowing to the drivers phase-locked, so the filters act as one coherent system. The rear-ported cabinet is built from thick milled hardwood laminates, reinforced at the sides by carbon fibre panels 1 mm thick, and internal block-milled wooden braces 5 mm thick help control standing waves and resonances. Ansuz Darkz resonance control is built into the lower part of the enclosure itself. The supplied stand is made of the same wood composite as the enclosure, contains no iron, and is fitted with Ansuz Darkz S2t devices, with room to add further resonance control units later. Buyers choose between gloss piano lacquer in black and in white, and carbon fibre inserts can be ordered for the exterior.
Pairing
Given its sensitivity and benign load, the C1 is best served by a solid-state amplifier with real power in hand, which gives headroom for a room of about 20 m2. At the back there is one set of binding posts arranged one above the other, and the spacing between them is tight, so banana plugs are easier to fit than spade lugs.
Alternatives
The Børresen X1 belongs to the Børresen stand-mount range too, sold as a separate line from the C series.
