The 3010i is the smallest bookshelf speaker of the 3000i series from Q Acoustics, a slim two-way reflex model that the British company intended for bookshelves or stands in homes where space is limited. Its cabinet is 25 percent larger than that of its predecessor, a change the maker made to gain bass extension and sensitivity from the same small frontal area. The pair was listed at GBP 169 in the UK and USD 379 in the US. Four colours were produced - Arctic White, Carbon Black, Graphite Grey and English Walnut.
Key specs that matter
A 100 mm (4 in) bass driver is paired with a 22 mm (0.9 in) tweeter, with a crossover at 2.6 kHz. The quoted response is 65 Hz to 30 kHz within +3 dB and -6 dB. Nominal impedance is 6 ohm, falling to a minimum of 4 ohm, and sensitivity reaches 86 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. Q Acoustics gives two power windows - 15 to 75 W for a stereo amplifier and 50 to 125 W per channel for a two-channel AV receiver. Internal volume is 4.0 litres, external dimensions are 253 mm high, 150 mm wide and 252 mm deep, and each unit weighs 4.1 kg.
Engineering and use context
For the bigger enclosure the crossover was revised so the extra volume translates into more output and lower bass reach. Internal braces are positioned by computer-aided Point to Point (P2P) placement to keep the walls of the box quiet. A compliant suspension isolates the tweeter mechanically from the front panel, and its wide surround is there to spread high frequencies evenly across the listening area. The mid/bass cones are made of impregnated and coated paper and move on a low-hysteresis rubber surround. At the rear, low-profile recessed binding posts reduce cabinet noise and accept 4 mm banana plugs, and the reflex port can be plugged with one of the foam bungs supplied in the box. The package also contains grilles, an owner's manual, handling gloves and eight rubber grips for the base of the speakers.
Pairing
Separate power ranges for stereo amplifiers and AV receivers make the 3010i easy to match, whether it is used as a main stereo pair in a room of about 20 m2 or as surround speakers alongside a multichannel receiver. With a modest minimum impedance rating, the speaker avoids the very low dips that some compact amplifiers and receivers find hard to drive, and the sensitivity means modest power is enough at normal levels.
Alternatives
The Q Acoustics 3020i is the bigger bookshelf model of the 3000i series, using a larger bass driver.
