Within the Concept series, the Concept 300 is the two-way standmount design from Q Acoustics, a British company. It was announced in March 2019 at EUR 3,750 per pair with stands included, while Q Acoustics UK now asks GBP 2,749 for a pair, with the Tensegrity stands offered as an option. Three two-tone finishes are listed - Black and Rosewood, White and Light Oak, and Silver and Ebony.

Key specs that matter

Every Concept 300 is built as a bass reflex enclosure with an effective volume of 11.4 litres. A 165 mm mid/bass driver with an impregnated and coated paper cone, a rubber surround, a 35 mm glass fibre voice coil and a ferrite magnet works with a 28 mm coated microfibre tweeter, with the two dividing the band at 2.5 kHz. Q Acoustics quotes a frequency response of 55 Hz to 30 kHz, a nominal impedance of 6 ohm and a sensitivity of 84 dB. The cabinet measures 355 mm high, 200 mm wide and 400 mm deep, and one speaker weighs 14.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Q Acoustics builds the MDF enclosure with two cabinet technologies named by the maker. Point 2 Point bracing links the walls inside to damp them, while the Dual Gelcore construction uses three MDF layers whose gaps are filled with a non-hardening gel that turns higher frequency vibrations into heat. An isolation base with four steel springs, damped with Sylodamp material tuned to the mass of the speaker, is integrated into the cabinet. A rubber gasket isolates the tweeter from its mounting. Both drive units are held by spring-tensioned retaining bolts fitted from behind, so no bolt heads are visible on the front. The Tensegrity stand takes its idea from the 1951 Skylon and the work of Richard Buckminster Fuller, with three load-bearing stainless steel rods held in position by thin stainless steel cables. With a speaker in place the stand assembly stands 690 mm tall, 492 mm wide and 430 mm deep, and each stand weighs 3.9 kg.

Pairing

The rear connection panel allows bi-wiring and bi-amping and accepts bare wire, spade connectors or 4 mm banana plugs, and a pair of jumpers is supplied so that a single cable run can also be used. Q Acoustics recommends stereo amplification of 25 to 200 W. The package also includes two foam bungs, two grilles, two owner's manuals and two cleaning cloths.

The Q Acoustics Concept 30 is a smaller stand-mount model in the Concept range, built around a 125 mm bass unit and a 25 mm treble unit.
