The 5010 is one of two bookshelf models in the Q Acoustics 5000 Series, a five-model collection that also includes the 5020 bookshelf, the 5040 and 5050 floorstanders and the 5090 centre channel, aimed at two-channel listening and at home cinema alike. The speaker combines a 110 mm (4.5 in) mid/bass driver and a 25 mm (1.0 in) tweeter in a cabinet of 5.0 litres effective volume. The pair is listed at USD 999, and the cabinet comes in four finishes - Satin Black, Satin White, Holme Oak or Santos Rosewood.
Key specs that matter
The crossover point is 2.5 kHz. Q Acoustics states a frequency response of 56 Hz to 30 kHz at the minus 6 dB points and a sensitivity of 86.3 dB, measured with 2.83 V at 1 kHz. Nominal impedance is 6 ohm, with a minimum of 3.3 ohm. The recommended amplifier power spans 15 to 90 W. Each speaker is 26.4 cm high, 16.0 cm wide and 26.3 cm deep, and weighs 5.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
For its mid/bass unit, the 5010 adopts the C3 Continuous Curved Cone profile, which Q Acoustics describes as merging the low-frequency strengths of a conventional straight cone with the better midrange behaviour of a flared profile. Inside, Point-to-Point bracing supports the parts of the enclosure that need to be stiffened, making the cabinet very rigid. The high-frequency unit is hermetically sealed and isolated mechanically from the baffle to prevent pressure modulation inside the cabinet from reaching it. A carefully vented inner chamber behind the dome serves lower distortion and a lower crossover point. On the front, the baffle carries a layer of butyl rubber and a black acrylic trim, which act both as damping and as a visual element with no visible fixings. The box contains the two speakers, a pair of foam bungs, two speaker grilles and an owner's manual.
Pairing
Because of the low minimum impedance, amplifiers stable into low loads fit best within the recommended power range. In a home cinema layout built from the 5000 Series, the centre and floorstanding models take the front positions, and the 5010 can also serve as a surround or rear channel.
Alternatives
The 5020 is the second bookshelf speaker of the Q Acoustics 5000 Series, with a larger 125 mm mid/bass driver, a 284 x 180 x 293 mm cabinet weighing 7.0 kg, 87.9 dB sensitivity and a list price of USD 1,199 per pair.
