The Q Active 200 is an active wireless stereo speaker system from Q Acoustics, the British loudspeaker brand. It is the stand-mount model of the Q Active range, designed from scratch as a complete system - a pair of self-powered speakers and a separate Control Hub that gathers sources and streams them to the speakers - so it can replace an amplifier, streamer and passive speakers in one package.
Key specs that matter
Each speaker uses two 58mm (2.25-inch) BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) drivers in an offset arrangement on the front and a rear-firing 114mm (4.5-inch) woofer handling frequencies below 160Hz. Every driver has its own Class D amplifier, six amplifiers in total, with 280W peak output (100W continuous) across the pair. Frequency response is 46Hz to 20kHz (-6dB). The hub has HDMI ARC, optical, an analogue RCA input switchable between line and moving-magnet phono, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and a subwoofer output, and streams to the speakers at 24-bit/96kHz. Each speaker measures 284 x 170 x 290mm and weighs 7.5kg.
Engineering and use context
A BMR driver combines pistonic motion at low frequencies with controlled bending (modal) behaviour at higher frequencies, so a small flat diaphragm can cover a very wide frequency band with broad dispersion. Using two per speaker in an offset layout widens horizontal dispersion further, which is why Q Acoustics avoids a conventional tweeter altogether. Below 160Hz, the rear-firing woofer takes over with its own amplifier, so the BMRs never have to reproduce deep bass. Giving every driver a dedicated amplifier allows filtering to happen in DSP before amplification, removing passive crossover components between amplifiers and drivers. The hub converts every input, including analogue sources through a 24-bit ADC, to a 24-bit/96kHz digital stream and sends it over a 5.8GHz wireless link to both speakers, so no cables run between the hub and the speakers except power. Streaming covers Chromecast built-in or Works with Alexa (depending on the hub version), Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, UPnP, aptX Bluetooth and Roon Ready. HDMI CEC lets a TV remote control volume and standby.
Pairing
The HDMI ARC input makes the Q Active 200 a full-range alternative to a soundbar, and the phono input connects a turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge directly. The subwoofer output adds a separate active subwoofer, such as Q Acoustics' own models, for larger rooms. Q Acoustics offers matching stands, and the system joins Chromecast, AirPlay or Roon multiroom setups.
Alternatives
Q Acoustics' own Q Active 400 uses the same hub and BMR technology in a floorstanding cabinet with more bass output.
