The VOID is Moondrop's first full-size headphone, an over-ear model with open cups, from a Chinese company better known for its in-ear monitors. Moondrop presents it as an open-back monitor model aimed both at home listeners and at monitoring work in professional music production. The first batch reached buyers in 2022, was recalled at the factory and was reissued with build improvements before wider availability.
Key specs that matter
A self-developed 50 mm dynamic unit with a composite membrane sits in each cup. Moondrop quotes a frequency response of 10 Hz to 80 kHz, while the effective response measured to the IEC60318-4 standard at the -3 dB points is 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Impedance is 64 ohm at 1 kHz, give or take 15 percent, and sensitivity is 110 dB per Vrms at 1 kHz. The cable is detachable and plugs into both earcups through dual 3.5 mm sockets, while the lead in the box terminates in one single-ended 3.5 mm plug. Moondrop states that the headphone is meant to be light without being flimsy and durable while staying comfortable over long sessions. Without its cable the headphone weighs 235 g.
Engineering and use context
The driver structure was optimised with finite element simulation, and it uses an internal magnetic circuit designed for efficiency. A flexible suspension with a corrugated surround carries the heterorigidity composite diaphragm, which is a PET film with a metal deposit on its dome. Moondrop tuned the response towards a target curve derived from HRTF data and says the tuning aims to keep large-amplitude nonlinear distortion low. The whole housing comes from a complete set of proprietary moulds. The cups are ivory plastic with a matte finish, and the plastic yokes rotate horizontally and tilt 30 degrees inward. A steel spring band covered in plastic forms the headband, with pleather pillows and memory foam on its underside. The oval pads measure 110 x 85 mm outside, with a 65 x 50 mm opening and a depth of 23 mm.
Pairing
Its moderate impedance lets the VOID run from a portable source or a desktop headphone amplifier, and the supplied adapter covers amplifiers with a full-size jack. The fabric-sheathed cable is 1.5 m long, with a straight plug at one end and two TRS connectors at the other. The box also contains a QC and contacts card, a user manual and a postcard.
Alternatives
The Moondrop VENUS is another open-back over-ear headphone from the same company.
